  • My family and I like to read books that are written by secular men, who are hostile to the Catholic Faith -- but we find that most books they write have bad things in them -- various problems that make the books difficult and even sinful to read.

Can anyone recommend some good books -- written by secular anti-Catholics -- that my family and I can read with profit?

    God bless,

    Matthew

  • The above post is satire, in case you couldn't tell.

    I'm making a point.

It's difficult finding good Catholic movies, when the headquarters of movie-making is fervently ANTI-Catholic. Not just non-Catholic, but secular, liberal, and anti-Catholic. Positively hostile to the Catholic Faith.

Look at the compromises Mel Gibson had to make for his movie, "The Passion of the Christ". I know how great that movie COULD have been, if the opinion of certain Red Sea Pedestrians didn't have to be considered.

    What compromises did he make?

  • It's rather lengthy, but YouTube "Hollywood" and "Satan"; click on the one with the black & white Hollywood star on it ( hey! I warned you about my lack of computer skills!). This video changed the way we think of movies. We are totally not of this world, just in it ( not fun).

  • Oops, wrong thread (can we say rookie?). This is about movies. Sorry.

I like James Herriot, myself. ( NOW I mean books!)

IIRC (and if not, please correct me), the line was left in the movie, but it wasn't translated/subtitled.

That's correct. It was left in, but there was no subtitle.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

As I recall, he didn't remove it, but it was said only in Aramaic and not translated in the subtitles, which is, of course, basically like removing it.

  • I really should read the whole thread before commenting.  I never seem to learn.

But when you have to explain it, it ceases to be satire.   :soapbox:
