What he stated is literally Lutheran doctrine.
No it's not. Luther said things to that effect, but his followers did NOT follow him. Lutherans admit that good works are needed for sanctification and salvation

That's a big overstatement. Certainly a large number of Evangelicals act like this, but it's unfair to say that this is the mentality of all Protestants. I have a number of High-Church Anglican/Lutheran friends, and they are often closer to us than many Novus Ordites. Read Richard Hooker, Bishop Butler,  Edward Pusey, R. L Dabney, etc. You can't make a blanket statement like that about such a large group of people
We are talking about Catholics who become Protestants.

But the ones that ex-Catholics flock to are the ones who think this way ... for the reasons stated.

His followers did not follow him? Why do they call themselves Lutherans?

Catholics always make the mistake of thinking that Protestants are like Catholics, a Church with a hierarchy and dogmas. They are not, the Lutherans for example are all over the place and in the end, each Protestant is a church of one.

You're absolutely right. I thought you were making a statement about all Protestants
