  • I have recently seen the movie Avatar and i thought it was a great movie with many hidden messages. Within the movie the view of pantheism is shown.

Pantheism derives from the Greek  meaning "All" and θεός (theos) meaning "God" - literally "All is God." Pantheism is the view that the Universe (Nature) and God are identical.

how do you guys feel about the movie and the views of Pantheism.

  • Hmm... well Pantheism (in general) isnt a subject I've been contemplating on much. Now that you mention it I'll take some time out to think on it. Lately St.Joseph has been on my mind. In the meantime maybe one of the other members will give a much better opinion that what I can, at the moment.

The movie of course I havent seen yet, but I think I really need to.

  • Pantheism that everything is a "manifestation" of God, that is to say that everything is like unto sparks flying from a fire (manifestations flying from the Divine).

All forms of Pantheism hold that the world is God and vice versa. This is impossible because its an impossibility that a cause can produce itself as its own effect. But pantheism states that God [First Cause and Necessary Being] is one with the world, which is a caused and contingent being.

Also the "God" of Pantheism cannot be God because the true God is pure actuality. There is nothing that God potentially be, since He is actuality. So God cannot change. Pantheism though, teaches that the "Divine Being" or "the Absolute" or "The Divine Essence" evolves in a series of manifestations and realizations of Himself - i.e., growth in that which is Perfection, improvement in that which is already Infinite and pure actuality.

For more on this I recommend the book Apologetics: A Philosophical Defense and Explanation of the Catholic Religion which is available at www.chantcd.com for around twelve dollars.

As for the actual movie, I have not seen it, but I do not think that it is the best interest for Catholics to attend profane shows that are all to often an occasion of sin (previews in the movie theatres are almost always an occasion of sin, even if its a children movie that is the feature presentation!).

I would not be surprised if there were implied and/or subliminal messages in Avatar, seeing that there are plenty of those even in Disney movies marketed towards children...

  • i also did read that the writer of the movie is an open freemason. In turn yes i agree, its not the best movie choice for a catholic.

In short, Pantheism is a heresy.
