  • I've developed the habit of making a slight bow of my head whenever I hear Christ's name.  A friend of mine, though, says we should do the same for Mary.

I was wondering if anyone else here does that whenever they hear Mary's name?  I've thought about doing the same, as this seems to be a reverent, good thing to do.  However, (and this may sound a little nitpicky or crazy) I feel like I'll be according Mary the same honor I would accord Christ, though he is greater than her.  Therefore, I'm not comfortable with that.  Does that make sense?  What is your opinion?

  • I don't know either of those things, but they are certainly a laudable pious customs.  I don't think it is a matter of "should" but "may" though.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • That is very true, Sigismund.

  • St. Louis De Montfort says he who honors Mary, honours Christ. He goes on about the famous son of St. Monica: "According to St. Augustine, even St. Michael, though prince of all the heavenly court, is the most eager of all the angels to honour her and lead others to honour her."

I don't think there's anything wrong in bowing our head at the name of Mary. If someone could tell me how it takes away from the reverence shown to our Blessed Lord, I would be interested. But I think its impossible to do.

    Antonia-

The feeling you get when you compare the honor of Mary and that given to Christ is not abnormal. I would suggest reading the work of St. Louis De Montfort I'd quoted above. You can read it here. Its really beautiful, and St. Louis is really remarkable when explaining this issue.

I can't believe I forgot that quote.  I've read a lot of St. Louis De Montfort's writings, so I'm a little ashamed that I had forgotten that.  Thank you!

  • You're very welcome. This is why we should be on forums like this, right? To help each other. I tell ya, topics like this don't come up much at work

Sometimes these types of thoughts creep into my mind too. St. Louis wrote so many good things, without a photographic mind (Like Hobbledehoy's) we're all bound to forget these things.

By the way- Welcome to the forum.

  • Yes, we bow our head when we hear or say "Jesus Christ" .  We may also bow our head for Our Lady/Mary only difference is Jesus gets a deeper bow than Mary which is slighter.
