  • I have noticed, at the bottom of this website, the following:

    Quote
Please pray for Bishop Richard Williamson, a noble prelate and hand-picked successor of Archbishop Lefebvre whose wisdom and zeal for the truth have inspired many.

I have never heard this before.  Did Archbishop Lefebvre publicly announce that Bishop Williamson should be his successor before this death?  Did he make it known in some other way?  If so, why is the Superior General of the SSPX elected at all?

  • I have wondered this also. Why is +Fellay the superior general, when +Williamson should have been? How did +Fellay get in there?
    Matthew 6:34
" Be not therefore solicitous for to morrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof."

  • Archbishop Lefevbre never wanted, and stated it, a bishop to lead the SSPX. He wanted a priest to do it. That's why before Fellay became Superior General, Fr. Schmidtburger was the SG. I have no idea how he finagled his way to that position, but the reason the Archbishop didn't want a bishop there, was so that people would not be confused by a false aura of authority coming from the bishop.
    Matthew 5:37

But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

So Bishop Williamson was not meant to be be the Archbishop's successor?  Did the Archbishop have a particular priest in mind?

No, that's not what I said. It's well known that Archbishop Lefevbre, if only consecrating one bishop, would have chosen Bishop Williamson, meaning that would have been his successor of course.

My response was to the person asking why Fellay ended up being SG. Archbishop Lefevbre never WANTED a bishop in the SG position, precisely because he wanted to make sure there wasn't a false sense of authority that was due to a bishop that held such a position. He wanted a priest at the helm and the bishops were only to administer sacraments and preach of course. But he did not want them to give off some aura of authority that they didn't possess, which is actually what we're witnessing now having a bishop as the SG of the SSPX.
