  • For some reason, I doubt that this little tidbit will be shouted from the rooftops with the same gusto as the original BS story.

AP Backtracks on Claims Disparaging Catholic Church

The Associated Press landed a blockbuster story in early June that hundreds of children had died due to neglect in a Catholic-run orphanage in Ireland during the mid 20th century.

Mass graves, unmarked burial sites, baptism refusals, and other lurid details put a severely negative light on the Irish Church and prompted several news outlets to carry the AP’s pieces on the developing story.

However, the AP got some of their facts wrong and the new details casts doubt on the truthfulness of the original allegations.

In a correction issued Friday, the AP admitted that claims that Catholic baptisms were refused to the children were not true. The AP’s pieces speculated that the children were refused baptism because they were the offspring of unwed mothers and even went so far as to claim that it was Church teaching at the time to not grant sacred rites to the children of single mothers. The AP also retracted that claim as false.

The AP also claimed that the children’s bodies were stored in a septic tank before being disposed of in unmarked graves. The researcher behind that allegation clarified that she could not make a definite statement on that claim because she lacked sufficient forensic evidence to prove it.

The news organization published two stories covering the case — one on June 3 and another on June 8. They were both written by reporter Shawn Pogatchinik.

Both articles insinuated that the Irish Church was responsible for the neglect that led to the deaths of 796 children at the orphanage between the years of 1926 and 1961. The June 8 article published the claim that the deceased children were denied Christian burials.

“Babies born inside the institutions were denied baptism and, if they died from the illness and disease rife in such facilities, also denied a Christian burial,” the piece reads.

"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

Are you suggesting there is no mass grave or dead children??

The AP is NOT the original source for this story.

The existence of the grave was uncovered by local woman Catherine Corless, who compiled the records of 796 babies who died at the home. She has established a group called the Children's Home Graveyard Committee to erect a memorial.

Teresa Kelly, the chairman of the Children's Home Graveyard Committee, said an excavation was long overdue.

'It's an awful story,' she said.  'It's a mass grave.  Many of the babies were malnourished. We want to make sure those children's identities are acknowledged. They had names, they were human beings, not animals.'

The grave was discovered in the 1970s by 12-year-old friends, Barry Sweeney and Francis Hopkins.

Mr. Sweeney said: 'It was a concrete slab and we used to play there but there was always something hollow underneath it so we decided to bust it open and it was full to the brim of skeletons.

'The priest came over and blessed it. I don't know what they did with it after that. You could see all the skulls.'

The home, which closed in 1961, was one of several such establishments - Catholic and Protestant - for 'fallen women' across Ireland which had astonishingly high infant mortality rates.

Sean Ross Abbey in Tipperary was another: in the first year after it opened in 1930, 60 babies died out of a total of 120. Those who survived, meanwhile, were often sold abroad to childless couples.

No, illiterate one, that's not what I'm suggesting. I simply quoted an item from the internet.

  • You're trumpeting this story as "BS" when it is not, and you're calling ME illiterate??

    Okey dokey.

     :fryingpan:

So, what is it you think about this story is so deserving of being trumpeted from the rooftops?? Dead children? Abuse?

The AP hates the Church? snooze.... that is not news.

Do we have to have this same tired story dragged out again?

The nuns acted properly.  The babies who died were abandoned by their despicable mothers and the nuns prayed for the repose of the soul of these babies every single day.

The mere absence of an expensive, and vanity-based tombstone, is not proof of abuse nor even wrongdoing in the slightest.

The AP added a lot of elements and played upon the lack of knowledge of superficial people.  Hey, back in the '30s and '40s, children sometimes died of diseases which are easily cured today but, due to the shards of glass for their souls, modern women routinely abort their babies in the name of convenience and the people who are aborting these babies are the same ones wagging their fingers at these precious nuns.

  • We Catholics do not bury babies and children in mass graves, unmarked.

We also do not use former septic tanks as "crypts."

So, how you can defend something utterly indefensible is beyond me.

I am sure the investigation will bring it all into the light.

  • Actually, it is pretty clear that there is no mass grave, at least not in the sense it was originally reported.  Lots of Irish nuns did bad things.  Apparently not these nuns, however.

Lots of Irish priests have molested kids.  That doesn't mean they all have, or that it is okay to wrongly accuse them.
