Title: Angry Priest Cancels Funeral
Post by: 1st Mansion Tenant on July 06, 2018, 12:34:22 PM
Such a short news item; it makes me wonder about the rest of the story - like what the guest was doing near the chalice in the first place?

CHARLOTTE HALL, Md. –  A Maryland priest has been placed on administrative leave after he booted mourners from a church where they were to hold a funeral.
The Archdiocese of Washington announced Tuesday that the Rev. Michael Briese is on leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
On June 27, before a funeral for Agnes Hicks could begin at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte Hall, WTTG-TV reports a guest knocked over a chalice, damaging it and angering the priest. Hicks' daughter, Shanice Chisley, said Briese ordered everyone out and disrespected her deceased mother, saying "'get this thing out of my church! Everyone get the hell out of my church!'"

The archdiocese says Briese apologized to the family. In a letter published in the local newspaper, Briese said anger "was the most inappropriate response."

Part of me feels like they had to be acting up before they knocked it over, and that’s pretty darn bad... what a horrible experience.

Yeah, I wonder about the whole story as well. If there were people horsing around up there, anger would be an appropriate response.

This is  a biased article.  Get what "thing " out of the Church.

Maybe the guests were drunk or high. Or it was planned to get money out of the Church or push an agenda.

I say the Funeral Parlor is to blame for not having control of the guests.  (About 200-300).  Usually , chalice is on altar.  It seems the problem is with the funeral parlor for not controlling the people.   The priest should have quietly walked out and drove out of there.

From the different articles, it seems that the funeral parlor failed to do their job of crowd control.

Maybe the truth will come out with the Vortex.

It could have been a chalice that is used by the Eucharistic Ministers.

Funeral parlour. It seems the funeral was in the church which is under the priest not in a funeral parlour. Funeral parlour don't do crowd control.
Monserrat could be right. Too many cooks ....?
The report reads that the chalice is more important than its contents. What a disaster. More to this than reported here.
Pray for Agnes Hicks

Good for the pastor.
Chalices are expensive and they had no business being that close to one to be able to damage it.  It sounds like the chalice was empty, thank God, since the priest said there would be no mass.

Absolutely crazy. On one hand, no lay person should be around a chalice unless an altar boy, second, if someone was fooling around with one I’d be angry too. A consecrated chalice reserved to hold the Blood of Christ?? Hands off!

after seeing the video.  It makes more sense.  (The media is a mess. )  It was NO open casket viewing before NO service where family is near altar and usually not much room when greeting people.

That was terrible what the priest did to family and friends.

Yes, may Agnes Hicks, RIP

Why wasn't the chalice on the credence table where it wouldn't get knocked off? At the funerals I have been to the people are seated in the church with the exception of the family. The body is outside of the church in the narthex. The priest invites the family members to place the pall onto the casket (which is closed). Then they process in with the casket and mass begins.
There may be more to this story than what the media is portraying. I have heard stories about situations where the funeral was cancelled in ways that were dramatic.
