One of my earliest childhood memories was the on-site auction of goods from St. Therese church in my town. They flogged everything, including sacrementals, and this was shortly after the close of (guess which) council. That beautiful stone church was then replaced with what can best be described as the nadir of modern architecture, a roundisch sort of pagan temple with oblique "chimney" containing random fragments of stained glass. Of course, the "altar" is in a pit, amphitheatre style.
