  • The chances that Stigler was National Socialist would be less than 50%. Is it known whether he was one?
Men are not bound, or able to read hearts; but when they see that someone is a heretic by his external works, they judge him to be a heretic pure and simple ... Jerome points this out. (St. Robert Bellarmine)

Interesting point: I just presumed that because he was in the Luftwaffe, he was a nαzι (i.e., since he was fighting for them).  Whether that was his personal ideology or not, I cannot say.

  • Most of the National Socialists were honorable. There are many stories like the one above.

  • If I recall correctly, German pilots were the more formidable fighter pilots, as attested by their over-all kill ratios.

Of course, this isn't admitted to or discussed much by the victors of the war
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

They were in the fight from the beginning and therefore the ones that survived racked up some large kill numbers.
