  • SHERMAN - Four county residents face charges following the collision of an Amish buggy with a Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department patrol vehicle Sunday evening in Sherman.

Police were responding to a report of an underage drinking part on Heslink Hollow Road and en route to the location, deputies encountered several Amish buggies traveling north and taking up both lanes of traffic on Clymer Hill Road. When a buggy in the southbound lane moved into the northbound lane, a second buggy moved from the northbound lane into the southbound lane occupied by the Sheriff's patrol car. The buggy and the vehicle collided causing the buggy to flip onto its side and a horse to become disconnected from the buggy.

Police say Marty Troyer, 20, of 8466 Raspas Hill Road, Panama, was operating the flipped buggy and admitted to having the party at his property. Marvin Byler, 19, of Mount Pleasant Road, Sherman, was a passenger in the buggy and was injured when his leg was trapped underneath the flipped buggy. The injury is considered minor. Marianne Troyer, 18, of 1804 Waits Corners Road, Panama, was also a passenger in the flipped buggy, but was uninjured in the incident. Leroy Troyer, 20, of 1834 Clymer-Sherman Road, Clymer, was operating the second buggy and stopped following the accident. The detached horse ran into a nearby barn.

Several containers of alcoholic beverages were found in the buggies and all four subjects were allegedly found to be consuming alcohol. They were all charged with underage possession of alcohol and Marty Troyer was additionally charged with unlawfully dealing with a child because he was hosting the party.

All four subjects will appear in Sherman Town Court at a later date.

  • I know this is going to sound crazy, but the Amish let their children loose when they turn 16 years old. Their reasoning is that they hope the children will get a taste of the modern world and be so disgusted by it that they will want to return to the Amish lifestyle. The kids are free to do whatever they want; they can simply go to the movies, shopping, traveling etc. But they are also allowed to booze it up and have sex parties.

This period of time is called Rumspringa (Dutch German for "run around"). It begins when they turn 16 and lasts until the choose to be baptized or choose to leave the Amish community.

Which is one of the reasons they are heretics.  Indulging vice.  The earliest Anabaptists (for example in Munster) were chiliasts and polygamists.

    Yeah.

And by no means was I defending them. I just shared this because I'm not at all shocked by the news. In fact, I'm surprised we don't hear more of it!

  • Many people believe as the Amish do.

My H was told my a (N.O.) Catholic priest 25 years ago that "kids will be kids" and that they usually leave home, leave the Church, get knee deep in an ungodly way of life, and then come back when they get married and have children of their own.

The whole attitude was that it was completely normal and a-ok.  Ultimately, they'd figure it out and everything would be "fine."  My H has retained this idea somewhat about our kids.  He likes to call sins "mistakes" and says that they will make mistakes but that they will then pick themselves back up and do the right thing.

To me this sounds like presumption ... whereas he believes that my point of view (that sin is sin and puts every soul at risk of losing their salvation) as extreme and lacking in FAITH.  He says he TRUSTS our kids ... and everything will work out right. He likes to talk about St. Augustine as an example of being a wayward son and ultimately coming back to the Faith ...etc.

What he doesn't seem to notice is that St. Monica spent her life on her knees praying and sacrificing without ceasing to beg God to spare her son and bring him back to Him.....

  • I understand the drive-by baptisms between the Amish and the Mennonites are really getting fierce...
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

Not all the Amish communities allow a Rumspringa, but I don't know how many or what portion of them do.  Based on what I read somewhere, it's not so much of a choosing of paths for the youth as it is a result of the parents being too damn wimpy to discipline their teens, and the Rumspringa is just a kind of cover used by the parents to dump their responsibility on the kids for the way they turned out.

But yeah, this is why I roll my eyes and go "pffff!" whenever I hear some idiot say we as Trads should be like (or are like) the Amish.

Annie, I'd appreciate your input on this matter. :)
