  • Is the tradition of having your children light Advent wreaths a Catholic tradition?

  • Not originally, but it was largely adopted by Catholics...

  • Thank you Phyrros. Do you think its a good tradition for children? I'm wanting to have a tradition for this season for my daughters, the eldest is 3, that would be fruitful. Any thoughts?

    I definitely think it is.

I grew up with this tradition and can hardly imagine this holy season without it. Since the 20s, advent wreaths rapidly spread through the Catholic world.

I have to admit, though, that some traditionalists reject it as being a "Protestant innovation". While strictly speaking true, it seems that the Church never discouraged it.

We have an Advent wreath, but you might also consider an Advent calendar. The day-by-day progression is an easier visual for small children than the week-by-week of the wreath. And, you still have time to get one as most don't start until December 1. Or, just draw something up on paper where a square or whatever can be colored or filled with a sticker each day ending at a picture of the baby Jesus.

  • An advent wreath was a big part of our observance of Advent with our kids, and every church (Latin rite, that it) that I have ever gone to has had one, including the FSSP parish I go to now.  Which reminds me, I need to go buy advent wreaths for my two new grandchildren.  Oh, did I mention I have two new grandchildren?
