Raoul,

I viewed your video. In it Abp. Sheen says:

* John XXIII had a good sense of humor (he gives examples).

* John XXIII brought the Church out into the world.

* He wanted to make men love one another.

* Everyone was welcome at the Council.

* He was in favor of scientific progress.

* He visited prisoners on death row and reached out to one.

I disn't see anything disturbing.

Sheen was an Americanism and favored the separation of Church and State.

And canonizing John F. Kennedy, even if he called him a "secular saint", in order to provide living examples of virtue goes too far.

No. Why do you?

Probably because it sounds like humanist humbug.

In contrast to other periti at the Council, like Msgr Bandas, +Sheen was ecstatic about what happened there and supported it with unalloyed buoyancy.

Msgr Bandas prepared with what he knew would happen, which was what did happen, and +Sheen only began responding to it toward the end of his career when he began to roundly criticize what he saw going on in the seminaries and the church at large.

He still had strong tendencies toward Americanism, and his position on the relations between Church and State are, to say the least, problematic.

My parents used to watch Bishop Sheen but I was young when he was on TV, I barely remember.
But I understood Raoul to be referring to the similarities in style or manner of speaking/affectations which apparently can hold peoples' attention.

Both have legitimate concerns about Marxism.

No. Why do you?

Yes, I find all three disturbing. Here's why:

John XXIII did bring the Church out into the world, the modern world. The Catholic Church is supposed to convert the world, not the other way around. The Novus Ordo has dropped the prayers that were in the TLM about "despising the earthly things of this world" and the prayers that we will not become attatched to them. That's not good. Surely you can imagine why.

Make men love one another? Either he wasn't specific enough, or John XXIII was you-know-what.

All religions should not have been welcome at the council. It's supposed to be a Catholic council, not a council for all religions. Before you say "Oh, but Protestants were allowed at Vatican I", there's a huge difference here. There were six Protestant ministers in attendance at Vatican II, I'm sure you've seen the picture of them standing with Paul VI. One of those six ministers said they would have no problem celebrating the Novus Ordo at their church. Another one said "We have finished the work of Martin Luther" after the NO was first celebrated. How is that not disturbing?
