  • Matthew has made it clear what the purpose of the Anonymous Subforum is:

    Quote from: Matthew

I wanted people to be able to ask sensitive questions without undue embarrassment.

It seems pretty simple and self-explanatory, really.

yet, for every proper use of the anonymous forum, there seem to be at least two flagrant abuses of it. Peruse the anonymous section and you'll soon come across threads like these:

    http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php?a=topic&t=37801&min=0&num=5

    http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php/Man-gets-epic-revenge-on-cheating-wife

    http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php/Heil-Hitl-I-mean-the-married-couple

    http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php/College-educated-blacks-and-Hispanics-saw-wealth-shrivel

    http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php/Hooray-for-Poche

    http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php/Social-experiment-mixing-blacks-and-whites

    http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php/Jeff-Foxworthy-on-Muslims

Why would any of these threads be started anonymously? Why would copying and pasting an article, or posting some stupid chain email joke list be deemed "sensitive?"

I can certainly see why some of these threads would be "embarrassing" to the person posting it; particularly something like this:

    http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php/Man-gets-epic-revenge-on-cheating-wife

The person who posted that knew full well that it was lascivious trash; knew he or she would be "embarrassed" to post it openly under his or her own username, but went ahead and posted it anyway. Is that, or is that not, flagrant abuse, not only of the anonymous feature, but of the forum itself, as a Catholic forum?

Take a look at my interactions with the game-playing coward posting the oblique references to dirty limericks on this thread: http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php?a=topic&t=37801&min=0&num=5

What does one call that if not trolling?

For the sake of the integrity of the forum as a whole, and of the anonymous forum in particular (which was started for - and still serves - a good purpose) I would like to formally request that the flagrant abusers of the anonymous forum (like the above) be occasionally "outed." Matthew has done it before, and I think it would serve as a wonderful deterrent to those duplicitous mischief-makers who want, against their own better judgments, to take regular breaks from the usual pious and edifying fare of the Forum to engage in rabble-rousing and ribaldry under the cover of cowardly total anonymity.

  • Downthumber- Kindly elaborate on your objection.

Whoops - look at that, no option for total anonymity in the General Discussion forum, is there?

I guess I'd better not hold my breath.

  • I use the anonymous forum when I want to talk about sensitive and personal topics. I also use it when I want to talk about a topic that might offend other posters so that I can get the point across anonymously without the other people getting angry at me and holding grudges.

I don't think Matthew should reveal the identity of anonymous posters.

Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • Sometime, maybe even often, people post anonymously because they know CI is being monitored and what they are posting would easily identify them not to CI members but to others.
Relating a specific incident from their chapel, family, about their priest could be dangerous to them if their identity were known.
There are a number of reasons to post anonymously without being a troll.

  • In my opinion, unless you are being attacked personally by an anonymous poster, it is none of your business, BTNYC.  It is Matthew's forum, and it is for him to determine if the rules are being broken.  BTNYC being annoyed isn't relevant to the situation.

  • True enough. It's not my forum.

My apologies if I've ruffled any feathers needlessly.

    God bless.
