I got this e mail the other day!  I thought it was a brilliant solution to lighting when the power is out

No Power? Read on...

Last week, a thunderstorm rolled through our neighborhood and a huge oak tree came down on some power lines, creating a power outage for a large area around us.  We lost power for about 5 hours. We were scrambling around in the darkness, looking for matches, candles, flashlights, etc. Then we looked outside and noticed our solar lights shining brightly all around our patio, stairs, dock, etc. They were beautiful.

My wife went outside and brought several of the solar lights into the house. We stuck the solar light pipes into plastic drink bottles containers and they made the nicest, brightest, safest, lighting you could ever imagine. We put one in the bathroom, the kitchen, the living room, etc. and there was plenty of light.

There are all types of solar lights available. We bought ours at Harbor Freight. We put them all around our yard. They look nice and they do not attract flying bugs like the outdoor lights around our doorway.
The lights we have fit easily into the small (20 oz) water bottles and they also fit into most of the larger liter bottles. If you need a weight in the plastic bottle to keep them from tipping over, just put a few of the pretty colorful "flat marbles" that are used in aquariums and vases or you can also use sand, aquarium gravel or whatever you have available.

The lights we have were perfect inside our home. They burn all night long, if you need them.

The next day, you just take your solar lights back outside and they will instantly recharge and be ready for you to use again any time you need them.  They are perfect for power outages, hurricanes, etc.

  That's brilliant!  You just gave me an idea for Christmas presents!  I was trying to think of something to give my relatives that would be practical and useful, original, and something that would fit into a small budget that I have decided on for Christmas presents.

Unless you have a whole bunch of them in one spot you're better off carrying around a flashlight. Those things are a joke.

Then again... maybe mum just keeps buying the crappy ones. Still...

Samurai,
Have you ever tried them indoors at might?  They certainly would be better than a flashlight.

Every night. My mom has some set up in the house. Nevertheless I still have to turn on the regular light to see where I'm going. You would think she would get a clue.

If you found some good ones, then that's wonderful! I'd encourage you to use that particular type or brand. But in my case 90% of the time they are useless.

Samurai,
Thats great feedback!
I received this e mail from someone who just sends out junk e mails, so you never know if  the articles she sends are  true or not.
Im glad to know, and Im sure others are, that you have to have good quality solar lights for them to give proper light in the house.
Thank you!
