Reading up on the brief, freemasonic Roman Republic in 1840's, found this passage:
"On February 2, 1849, at a political rally held in the Teatro Apollo, a young Roman priest, the Abbé Arduini, made a speech in which he declared that the temporal power of the popes was a "historical lie, a political imposture, and a religious immorality."[1)

Now a days, Arduini would be referring to the Pope as "Club Infallible". Invasion of Papal States and occuaption by Freemasons, religious liberty, liberal laws-hmm...guess a good reason for VI after all!
