  • We are all different, so the books that will be "perfect" for one are not necessarily so for all.  We also go through different seasons in our own lives, during which some books are helpful while others, good in themselves, are harmful.  ANY good book is a tool meant to be used by God for edification, instruction and consolation.  Not ALL books do such for all of us all of the time.  Holy Writ is an obvious exception, although not ALL the books contained therein are good to be read by ALL people at ALL times.  God's will is what gives ANYTHING power and efficacy - a book, His own or others, any other created thing, etc.  God speed in JMJ

  • My top five:

    1) Bible
    2) Collective writings of the Church Fathers (ok, I know that's cheating a bit!)
    3) The Imitation of Christ
    4) The Summa
    5) St. Louis de Montforte's True Devotion to Mary

Add to that anything written by St. Alphonsus de Ligouri (I agree with SOJesus- they are all excellent!) the Interior Castle by St. Theresa of Avilla (still have to read the whole thing), Autobiography of a Soul by St. Therese of the Child Jesus, The Mass in Slow Motion by Fr. Ronald Knox, the homilies of St. Bede and two wonderful works on Our Lady in England, "Pietas Mariana Britanica" by Edmund Waterton and "Our Lady's Dowry" by Fr. Bridgett.
