  • Of course, there are many post-Thanksgiving shopping deals out there, but this is the one I'm having the hardest time deciding on. I can't let a good book coupon pass me by and yet I don't know what I want.  :reading:

30% Off Any Amazon Book up to $10 off until December 1

I believe Barnes and Noble is offering the same -- 30% off one item -- but I haven't tested to make sure that coupon works as I don't see it advertised on their site.  Nevermind, found it here.

    So... any recommendations?

I was thinking a good read-aloud for my children, but many of the ones I want to read I can get on my Kindle for free.

If you select a level and scroll down to literature, this site has wonderful read-aloud suggestions. It was my basis for many, until we read them all!

  • Oh, and the Mensa Kids reading list has some good suggestions, I can't say I could vouch for all the books but there were some I never read that I was really missing out on.

  • I recommend:

Fifty-One Tales by Lord Dunsany. This is a collection of very short prose poetry by one of the greatest authors of the 20th Century. I think older children (and smart and sensitive, which I'm sure yours are) would love the evocative language and clever twists. There is a lot of Greek mythology woven into these imaginative and melancholy tales.

Nordic Gods and Heroes by Padraic Colum. A rewriting of the Eddas in approachable language. I would have immensely enjoyed being read this as a child of 8.

I think smart/sensitive kids would love them, along with the adult readers. However, they are too difficult for children below the age of reason (the Dunsany being more difficult than the Colum).

But I wouldn't rule any book out on the basis of being a bit difficult, especially not when the sound and substance are wonderful in their own right. My parents read my brother and I The Lord of the Rings when I was 7 or 8, and it is one of my fondest childhood memories, even if - maybe partly because - I didn't understand everything.

  • James Herriot's Children Stories  :applause:

The Miracle of St. Nicholas is not Catholic but a nice story.

  • Oh, how could I forget Pyle's "The Wonder Clock" (make sure to get the illustrations! They are key to the text!)

Or Pyle's "Otto of the Silver Hand"

  • Thank you all for the suggestions. B&N had some huge illustrated fairy tale collections on sale (Grimm and Andersen), so I went with those. They'd have to be total junk to not be worth the price they wanted.

I added many a book to my Amazon wish lists.

Iuv - Are Pyle's illustrations all b&w? If so, I think I found the right version, but I'll have to check Google books as Amazon didn't have a preview for it.

Graham - Is Nordic Gods and Heroes the same as The Children of Odin: The Book of Northern Myths? I saw both of these, but then one entitled The Children of Odin: Nordic Gods and Heroes and thought they might be the same. Again, Google books might be more helpful.

LA - Amazon certainly isn't making waves in this respect since most retailers operate on Sunday. If I wanted to boycott Amazon, I could come up with plenty of good reasons to do so. I think it would be more helpful to know of national of regional business that I should support as I generally presume none of them are worthy of my business and only get it out of necessity. (I don't know of a major book seller that doesn't operate on Sunday.)
