It may depend partly, as Lad said, on a given culture, but also probably could vary according to a woman's taste.  For me, it depends.  I generally prefer clean-shaven (including my hubby), but I think some men look better with beards.  I've known men with let's just say a not-so-strong-looking jawline, where the beard helped it looked much better. I'm not a big fan of men wearing a mustache, but then again, some men look better with a mustache.  (e.g. Tom Selleck, Clark Gable)  Some men look good wither way: clean-shaven or with a beard.  And I agree with what Nadir said about a "prickly man."

I like a man with a beard. When I met my husband he was senza barba. Nevertheless I fell in love with him first glance.

After we married he let his beard grow. Then we moved to an area where nearly every man had a beard. Sort of hippyville. So he shaved. Later, when we moved to a town he stopped shaving. Nowadays he has a beard.

One factor in growing a beard is that about 9 years ago he suffered one sided facial paralysis which left him with a slight facial drop.

He is a handsome man either way.
My husband has grown and maintained his beard with a moustache since 1995.
At Christmas time, some children think he is Santa Claus.
