Smirking Teenager Laughs as He Enters Court Accused of Shooting Dead Newlywed Father-to-Be Who "Struggled During Robbery"The 16-year-old suspect in the murder of a young father-to-be in Indianapolis laughed and smirked as he was led to a hearing this morning.
Simeon Adams is facing a murder charge for the shooting death of 24-year-old computer programmer Nathan Trapuzzano as he took an early morning walk on April 1.
Wearing a prison issue jumpsuit and shackled to another prisoner, Adams only laughed when a reporter asked him if he had anything to say. His neck was covered with a large bandage, the result of a bullet wound the teenager incurred the night after he allegedly killed Trapuzzano.
The Indy Star reports that Adams faces a count of 'knowing murder,' a count of felony murder, attempted robbery, unlawfully possessing a firearm and a five-year enhancement from committing a felony with a firearm. He will be tried as an adult. The murder charges carry sentences of 45 to 65 years, and the attempted robbery charge carries a 20 to 50 year term. Adams's trial will begin on June 2.
Simeon Adams, known by the nickname 'Red', is alleged to have confessed to a friend that he shot Nathan Trapuzzano once in the stomach after the newlywed, who was expecting his first child, reached down to his shoes as Adams made him strip during the robbery.
Adams' friend Marvell Robinson told detectives he was woken up by the alleged shooter on the morning of April 1 at his home in Indianapolis. Adams told him: 'Man, the police is out here and they are looking for me.'
Robinson told detectives Adams made Nathan strip, according to the court papers. 'When he told Nathan to take his pants off the victim started reaching for his shoes and Simeon asked him [Trapuzzano] "Why you reaching for your shoes?" Simeon said the "white man tried to tussle with me so I shot him."'
Trapuzzano, a 24-year-old software engineer, had been out for a morning walk at around 5am, when Adams and accomplice Martez 'Duh-Duh' McGraw allegedly targeted him.
Adams is also accused of shooting a man outside Baba's Steak and Lemonade eatery two nights before. Erick Douglas was there with his brother when he bumped into 'Red' as he got out of his car. They exchanged words and Adams is alleged to have fired three shots into Douglas. Two hit him - one in the groin and one in the left leg.
Adams was himself shot in the neck and taken to hospital in a serious condition at 11.30pm on the day he is alleged to have murdered Trapuzzano. Adams wanted to rob Nathan, police allege. But to Nathan's family, what makes his killing even more senseless is that he never carried anything of value on his walks.
His widow Jennifer Trapuzzano told the MailOnline that Nathan always used to take his daily exercise in the evenings, but fatefully changed his routine that week so he could spend more time with his pregnant wife of just less than a year. Tuesday was only the second time he had gone for a walk in the morning.
Jennifer does not want to focus on her husband’s killer, but she has spoken exclusively to MailOnline to pay tribute to her husband.
Describing their final evening together the 25-year-old said: ‘The night before he died I wanted some ice-cream, so we walked to McDonald's, it was very normal, but it was a lovely night.
‘I don’t know why, but we talked about him passing. We were lying in bed and I told him, "I don’t know what I’d ever do without you."
‘He was the only person I had ever fallen in love with. I always told him he was my one and only. When I fell in love I wanted it to be for real. I wanted it to be the person I was going to marry.
‘He knew when I told him I loved him that meant I wanted to marry him. I had feelings for him, but I wanted it to be a conscious decision, like, I am choosing to love you and I am choosing to love you forever, not just because I feel something for you today, but because I am going to feel something for the rest of my life.
‘He really respected that, even though I think it meant he fell in love with me before I fell in love with him.
‘So that evening when I told him "I don’t think I could exist without you, you’re my one and only", he said, "You’d make it through". I said, "I don’t think I would, I would probably end up living with my parents for 40 years."
‘I told him I was too silly to get by without him and he laughed and hugged me tight. He told me he loved me so much and I said, "I love you too".
'I rolled onto my left side and he rolled over and put his arm around me because he wanted to feel his baby girl, that’s the last thing I remember.
‘He was holding his baby girl and he felt her kick. I woke up the next morning and he was gone.’
According to Jennifer, Nathan was extremely disciplined in everything he did. He was absolutely dedicated to his Catholic faith and he was regimented in his exercise routine. Every evening he would go for a walk round the local neighborhood, using the time to reflect and pray as well as keep himself in shape. But he was also incredibly devoted to Jennifer and as a result he decided to change his routine and take his stroll in the morning so he could spend more time with her after he finished work as a computer software designer.
That decision had tragic consequences. Jennifer said: ‘One of the hardest things about all this is that last week was the first week he ever went for a morning walk.
‘He would always go in the evening, but it was getting warmer and he wanted to spend more time with me, so Monday and Tuesday, the day he was shot, were the first times he went in the morning. I thought it would be a safer time for him because the sun was coming up.
‘There is no rhyme or reason, but it makes it harder that it was the first week he went in the morning. He was so diligent about his exercise. When he was walking he would always pray or listen to podcasts on the Catholic faith.
‘He never took anything of value. His keys would have been the only thing. He didn’t take his wallet, I know because the police couldn’t identify him when they found him. He didn’t have his phone, but that was a flip phone with duct-tape holding the battery in anyway.
‘All he had was his gold crucifix and his gold wedding band, but they didn’t take either of those, which I’m glad about. Even his MP3 player was worth $23.’
At first police struggled to provide a motive as to why anyone would attack someone dressed in a sweater and track pants out on their morning walk.
Some suggested it was a sick gang initiation, but it now seems it was just a desperate robbery attempt by young thugs.
A look into Adams’ past shows the kind of troubled childhood that may have taken him down a murderous path. It can revealed that his mother died when he was one and he has never lived with his father. Adams's uncle Al Carter told MailOnline he did not believe his nephew was capable of murder.
But at the same time he admitted the teen had been in and out of juvenile detention centers for years. And this morning more details of Adam’s extensive rap sheet emerged. Adams and another man were accused of stealing several firearms from a local shop last month. It is believed a stolen weapon was used in Nathan’s murder.
Local television station 6 ABC reported that Adams has been in and out of handcuffs since 2007, with arrest reports indicating he has been caught with guns, drugs and various stolen goods for years. In October 2013, police said he was caught with a stolen pistol after he and a friend were driving around on a scooter. Two months later in December, Adams was caught with another gun. Police said a woman’s car was stolen as she fueled up at a Sunoco gas station. When the car was found, Adams was nearby with marijuana and a loaded .38-special pistol.
In another arrest last year, Adams was caught carrying a flat-screen TV from a home that had just been burgled, records said. And when he was just nine years old, police said he and three friends were arrested for tossing huge rocks onto traffic from the Interstate-65 Bridge at MLK Street.
According to Fox 59, Adams was given 30 days home detention in mid-February for auto theft and resisting charges, 120 days monitored probation and told by the judge that he must attend school. Almost immediately, Adams broke the conditions of his detention and a probation officer sought a hearing to have him incarcerated. Judge Gary Chavers set that hearing for April 7, but within a few days, C & C Midwest Firearms was burglarized and Adams later went on a crime spree that culminated in his arrest for Trapuzzano's April 1 shooting, police said. If Adams had completed his probation without incident, he would have been free of the juvenile justice system by mid-June.
A Good Samaritan who revealed her desperate attempts to help Nathan Trapuzzano in his last moments was alerted to the attack when she heard a gunshot at around 5.50am, looked out of her window and saw him stagger from the parking lot desperately screaming, 'help, help, help' before collapsing face first. She called the police and paramedics immediately then rushed out with a towel to see if she could stop the bleeding and save the dedicated pro-life campaigner.
Describing the heart-wrenching scene the woman – who wants to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals – told MailOnline: 'I heard a shot, but at first I didn't pay too much attention because there are shots all the time round here.
'But then I heard someone yelling, 'help, help' help!' so I looked out of the window and saw him stumbling around. He was shouting very loud because he was fighting for his life and trying his hardest to save himself.
'I got on the phone to the ambulance, but then I saw him collapse and I didn't know what to do. The operator said I could go over to him if I wanted to. I was scared, but I wanted to do something, so I took a towel in case I needed to apply pressure to the wound.
'I got over there and he had been stripped of his shirt and his shoes. He was just wearing jogging bottoms. It was really strange, because there wasn't much blood. He was conscious, but I think he was in shock, because he was struggling for breath.
'It was just a small bullet wound. He was lying on his side and at first I couldn't see it. I didn't want to move him. The paramedics arrived in five-and-a-half minutes.'
Trapuzzano died in hospital a few hours later.
Adams' next court date is May 2.
