Why we have an Electoral College

  • 319 SQUARE MILES

In their infinite wisdom, the United States' Founders created the Electoral College to ensure the STATES were fairly represented.
Why should one or two densely populated areas speak for the whole of the nation?

The following statistics have been making the rounds on the Internet. They should finally put an end to the argument as to why the Electoral College was a brilliant stroke by our Founders.

There are 3,141 counties in the United States.

Trump won 3,084 of them. Clinton won 57.

There are 62 counties in New York State.

Trump won 46 of them. Clinton won 16.

Clinton won the popular vote by approx. 1.5 million votes. Of the 5 counties that encompass NYC, (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Richmond & Queens)
Clinton received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. (Clinton won 4 of these counties; Trump won Staten Island.)

Therefore, these 5 counties alone, more than accounted for Clinton winning the popular vote of the entire country.

These 5 counties comprise 319 square miles.
The United States is comprised of 3,797,000 square miles.
In a country of nearly 4 million square miles, it would be ludicrous to suggest the vote of those inhabiting 319 square miles should dictate the outcome, the culture and the ideology of our nation. That is less than .00008% of the land area.  That only happens in countries that have NO freedom.

Large, densely populated cities (NYC, Chicago, LA, etc.) DO NOT and SHOULD NOT speak for the rest of our country!

Especially when the great majority of our nation's problems (gangs, shootings, crime, poor education, high taxes) are located there.

  • The US electoral college system works similar to something from ancient Rome called the Centuriate Assembly. Voting men were organized into groups of 100 and the majority vote of each group determined how the Century voted.

This system has some benefits according to game theory, as it emphasizes a “broad” win.

The system also appears in many sports. The winner of the US baseball and basketball playoffs is the team winning the most games, not the team with the most scores. The winner in a tennis match wins the most sets, not necessarily the most games or the most points.

Gerrymandering and the winner-take-all method of most states are separate issues.

  • With all due respect,

The Electoral College represents people, not voters. Because each state is supposed to decide who gets to vote, the ratio of voters per person is different per state. A rural state will have fewer voters per person than an urban state but all the people in that rural state have a voice through the voters. Their is no such thing as winning the "popular vote" but losing the race because that candidate only had more voters, not more popular support. Not every pro Trump person can vote but they are represented in the Electoral College. Its simply a weighted average where the voters are the voice of the people.

    Thank you
    Pray the Holy Rosary.
