As I understand it, the French mindset is that, as long as you are willing to speak French, and to adopt the French way of thinking --- liberté, égalité, fraternité --- as well as French customs and social norms, anyone can be French.  It's far from being an ethnostate.  They do not even ask about race when they take their census.

Adopting the customs and social norms of the host country --- what a concept!  Heaven help you if you don't say "bonjour" to the shopkeeper when you enter a store, or fail to send New Year's greetings to everyone in your social circle.

The French Republic is not France. It's a global socio-economic project very much like the creation of the United States in 1776.

It's the same in all sports, MLB, NFL etc. 

The National Anthem has little to no meaning to most of the players anymore, heck, I've seen where coaches will tell an assigned interpreter what he wants, who translate his instructions to the player. It's sickening and more common than it should be for sure.

Because football is very much a poor man's/immigrant sport in France and a lot of the world. It's a sport you can play with very little.
