Not to nitpick, but Joseph Smith got started in upstate New York, where he claimed the visions occurred, and he and his followers got run out of other places before they ended up in what is now Utah.

I'll give them credit, they took a wasteland and made it into a decently-functioning society, which endures to this day.  Too bad we as traditional Catholics don't have a large piece of real estate where we could establish a "Zion" like that.

Yep.  Being familiar with eastern Idaho (I've not been to Utah other than a weekend in Salt Lake) it is impressive how they settled in lands that no one else wanted: arid, barren, rocky, with harsh winters, and turned these areas into fruitful and thriving communities.  Irish Catholics came to the Salt Lake basin with railroad construction, and the Cathedral of the Madeleine was consecrated in 1909.  It is worth a visit if one is ever in the area.
