  • I got this from an advertisement for "climber.com" -- that is, go up in your career. Guess who is pictured? A woman.

I don't know where to begin criticizing this picture of a modern woman:

It pretty much captures the attitude of the modern woman -- being an artist, I can attest to the fact that it is a good summary of everything that goes into "modern liberated woman". The look on her face, her shoes, her pants, her slim figure, her plunging neckline, etc.

This woman certainly uses birth control, and maybe had an abortion so her career wouldn't be jeopardized?

On the plus side, if I met this woman in real life (yuck!) I wouldn't have to put forth much effort to be faithful to my wife.

    Chant. She's not real!

And even if she were, I would be very reluctant to say that an identified woman "certainly uses birth control".

It's one thing to generalise and say that "most women use birth control" because noone is being singled out and identified. But to point to a particular woman who wears trousers and has pink hair, and to conclude that she "certainly" uses birth control, is rather rash!

    Some people defy the stereotypes.

Edit to add: Can you look at a modestly dressed woman in a skirt and say with certainty that she doesn't use birth control?

    Clare.

  • Chant, have you thought about seeing a doctor? Because you're clearly insane.

First off, you are analyzing a little computer drawing in minute detail, looking for its "hidden message".

Second, is there something wrong with being thin now?  It means a woman isn't "Catholic enough" or something? This doesn't make any sense.

Lastly, do you really think  it is appropriate to make such rash judgments (on real people)?
Especially because appearance doesn't tell you very much?  For example, I wear pants 99% of the time and wear my hair very short (and often blue), so you would assume that I am on birth control.  It's ridiculous and couldn't be further from the truth!

  • I wonder what the computer-generated cartoon image of a stay-at-home, devout christian, mom of 10 or so looks like?

  • My point would be: probably not like the above image.

The image is a stereotype, and no it's not sinful to judge a "model" or a "stereotype". Now the individuals who attempt to follow that stereotype must be given the benefit of the doubt, prayed for, and any judgment must be reserved to the Just Judge.

We can't read what is in people's souls.

  • Generalising is fair enough.

But individuals that one encounters, who appear to fit a stereotype, should be treated as though they are the exceptions, until we know otherwise.

And even when we do know otherwise, we shouldn't be unfriendly!

Believe it or not, that is my habitual mode of action.

I think it's been brought up before -- Many people are very nice in person, at their local TLM chapel, etc. but they are fiery online as they philosophize and discuss abstract ideas. That would be me.

My goal is to be like the saints: to show no weakness or mercy to error, but be gentle and charitable with those who are IN error. And of course, the saints were very quick to excuse INDIVIDUALS, unless they were in positions of authority where it is their job to correct or chastise.

I can judge the cartoon (above) because it represents a way of life to the advertisers who use it. That way of life is repugnant to nature itself, let alone the Catholic faith.

    In Christ,

    Matthew

    I can believe it, Chant.

As trads go, I'm fairly on the "liberal" wing (not minding trousers or pop music, for example), but in my exchanges on Novus Ordo forums, people there think I'm a real hardliner.

It's because modern Catholics don't seem to understand the concept of principles. And it's frustrating to find oneself arguing with one's co-religionists about things we should be agreeing on. Like contraception and the like. They'll start bringing up hard cases, and because I inflexibly repeat the motto: "the end doesn't justify the means", they assume that means when I encounter people who might use birth control, I spit at them or something! Or because I insist that the Catholic Church is the One True Church, they think I'm incapable of getting along with non-Catholics without pointing out to them every two minutes that their religion is false!

Thing is, I shouldn't be having to argue with Catholics about these things. I don't expect non-Catholics to agree with me. I also don't have a problem with Catholics who acknowledge that certain things they do are sins. It's when Catholics start assuming that because they, and a lot of nice people they know, use birth control (for example), it can't possibly be wrong, that I get on my high horse!

  • I had eight and the toon above showed real life upon occasion.  In real life you become regimented.  There is no room for children to run amuck as a general rule, though there are times when things go awry.  I come from a family of fourteen, eleven living.  We lived on a farm and we WORKED.  When I raised my kids, they WORKED.  The biggest problem was in-fights, probably because I hated being judge.

      You're just a little insane...
My mom would have said that same thing but she would also go on about the lovely figures of the starving people in Africa...
Do you eat on a regular basis? I'm actually a little worried for you.
