The Babylon Bee: Blasphemous and Non-Catholic

  • Faithful Catholics, I urge you to refrain from supporting the Babylon Bee, as they do not uphold Catholic doctrine. In one of their recent articles, they mockingly challenge the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a sacred truth of our Faith. This blasphemous portrayal not only offends the honor of Our Lady but also undermines the teachings that have been faithfully preserved by Holy Mother Church throughout the ages.

  • Why would The Babylon Bee uphold Catholic doctrine? Is it supposed to be Catholic?  I thought it was a liberal publication/site.

No one should get a pass, you should be outraged Our Lady was blasphemed.

I have also witnessed a few members share content from this site.

I never said anyone "gets a pass" nor that I'm not outraged.  However, when non-Catholic, liberal rags do it, I'm just not shocked by it. Your OP makes it sound like they are Catholics not upholding Catholic doctrine which most certainly is different.  Maybe it was just the way you worded it.

Not exactly liberal since they're usually on the "correct" side re morality and social issues. It's an adamantly protestant website, likely calvinist/reformed since they don't hesitate to poke fun at the gazillion other pseudo Christian sects besides their own.

It isn't the first time they've mocked Catholicism, there's usually something questionable every few weeks or so. But this latest one was the most blatant and obnoxious, especially the timing a few days before the Assumption. They're not budging though, the main guy's been sassy on Twitter at all the Catholic accounts that unfollowed and blocked and told their own followers to do the same.

Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things pass away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. He who has God finds he lacks nothing; God alone suffices. - St. Teresa of Jesus

  • What is the Babylon Bee?  I assume it’s some sort of magazine or newspaper.  Do many Catholics read it or subscribe to it?  I guess I’m just “out of the loop,” as usual.

  • It's a satire site like Onion News but more right leaning I believe.

And apparently, I'm more out of the loop than I thought because I had always thought it was left leaning.  Maybe I'm confusing it with some other publication.

  • Crazy to make such a big deal about this... we have much bigger fish to fry and Babylon Bee do a good job overall. Of course, there is always a concern with comedy that they go too far at times... in any case we should pray for them IMO.

It's a satire website and they are upholding the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the satire, not denying it. If anything it's a wake up call for those who place martial relations on such a high level when St Joseph didn't have any.

The pearl clutching is always cringe IMO. There was no malice in this.

  • I rebuke this entire anti-catholic message.

And when your finished rebuking everyone and everything you'll be alone, isolated and easy prey.

Pray for those who say things out of ignorance or carelessness, teach and guide where possible... save the condemnation for those who act out of malice.

This article is clearly not a hill to die on, clearly not malicious in intent, it was simply careless, ignorant or insensitive... and if you choose to die on such a hill as this then it's frustrating because now I'm down another man for the big fight and I'll need you and them for that one.

Thank you for your concern about maintaining unity among the faithful. However, the defense of Our Lady’s honor and the truths of the Faith must take precedence, even if it leads to isolation or confrontation. The forum this was posted in is titled "Fighting Errors In The Modern World."

Our Lady is a hill I will die on, but this is just one post of many I will include in this very specific forum anytime I come across similar issues to inform my fellow faithful Catholics.

Pope Leo XIII teaches in Sapientiae Christianae (1890) that silence in the face of error is "the part of a man either devoid of character or who entertains doubt as to the truth of what he professes to believe." He emphasizes that such silence is "insulting to God" and emboldens the enemies of the Faith. Therefore, it is our duty "to speak out with force and fearlessness" against blasphemy and error, especially when it concerns the Most Holy Virgin Mary.

Pope St. Pius X, in E Supremi (1903), further warns that "the chief strength of the wicked lies in the cowardice and weakness of good men," and laments that Catholics often fail to defend Christ and His Church, becoming "the accomplices of [His] adversaries." To remain silent in the face of blasphemy is to aid those who seek to undermine the Faith.

Archbishop Lefebvre consistently called upon the laity to recognize and oppose the errors of the modern world, particularly those that seek to diminish the truths of the Faith. He urged Catholics to stand firm and speak out against these errors, understanding that the defense of the Faith requires clarity and courage.

Clarity and courage... yes... but it's missing a very important one... charity.

If they acted out of malice it would be a different story, I not only think the Babylon Bee have some good articles and have done some great work, but I also think they were in no way malicious or ill-willed... It also upholds the Perpetual Virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the satire so I don't know why you think it denies that.

I just think your original post lacked charity.

    God Bless
