There is some confusion and denial in the mainstream media over the real impacts of the ongoing boycott of Target (TGT) because of its controversial bathroom policies allowing men into women's rooms and vice versa, which came into force April 19....

...The likely impact of the consumer boycott against Target can be determined by comparing its market cap performance for equal periods before and after the transgender policy came into force against that of its competitors.  As the graph below (see link above) shows, Target's normalized market cap has declined far more than any of its competitors since April 19....

....Consequently, the rational conclusion is that the Target boycott has already directly cost the company more than $9 billion in market cap.  Even if we adopted a more conservative approach that averaged the post-April 19 market cap performance of all Target's natural competitors, we still end up with nearly the same boycott-induced loss of market cap.

  • i signed that boycott list. Hardly an achievement or sacrifice, i know, but I also have boycotted Target, though I never shopped there anyway. I would boycott all such stores, businesses, for the sake of keeping the bathroom policy the way it was, which is the best for society. Also, this bathroom directive by Obama is strange because there is certainly no consensus for it, not among parents with their kids in these schools. Not a wise use of presidential power to make a directive on something so far from black and white.

I know it's obvious that Obama is disregarding the legislative process, but at least on this issue, it seems that the states are playing right into his hands by suing him. The legal battles always go back and forth until the Supreme Court rules and effectively makes law where there was none before. That can come to pass even years after Obama has left office. Whereas, if they hadn't filed suit, Obama would actually have to take the step of withholding federal funds for his letter to amount to anything more than an empty threat.
