There was lukewarmness in every age. However, in the 50's the culture was not completely hostile to the faith and the Church still taught the faith. There is no question Catholics are worse off today.

I have to agree that in part, the 50's were a bit better time-but Catholicism world wide and esp in USA was rather lax and "follow the priest" mentality..ripe for V2..but also, the 50's as a bit of a replay of Victorian puritanism, though again, largely better than now,some basic Christian ethics and morals.A Calvinst makes a good points in this article:

I know that the 1950's were better than today, my problem is when they are upheld as ideal. When I think of puritanism in the 1950's I think not of something rigorous, but of pietism. Such pietism states that priests are to only preach on pious practical subjects and not on anything controversial. It wants them to avoid nonreligious subjects or doctrine that may scare some away. To the pietists, the goal of priests and bishops is to get us to heaven, not teach one about the world. Such mentality as one can see leads to a compartmentalization and a lack of integral Catholicity.

By all leading indicators the Church was flourishing in the 1950's. Vocations and conversions at an all time high!

It seems odd to go looking for things to pick on in 50's Catholicism comparing it to the ideal, when the Church was in Her glory compared to today.

I'd say saving one's soul is most important for preaching, but that doesn't mean you can't address other concerns.
