  • Usually done covertly:

  • Yes, we get less and less for more and more.  It’s this way with everything on this earth.  Look at deceptive packaging.  In the USA, a standard can of tuna fish was 7 1/2 oz.  Today?  5 oz.
Look at sports beverages like Gatorade.  The bottles are redesigned to look the same from the outside, but turn them upside down and you’ll see a long empty hole going up inside the bottle.  A non food that has really shrunk is brand name Playdoh.  Compare containers from the 1960s thru today.  They’re the tiniest ever.  Such a waste of time!  Make your own play dough.  It’s just as fun and you can mix your own colors!

  • This has been going on for years, and frankly it's likely to continue.

The US Dollar is backed by nothing, and the more dollars they print (synonymous with the US National Debt, I should point out) the weaker the dollar becomes, and the more dollars it takes to buy a unit of _____.

If the National Debt could somehow be paid off, there would be exactly ZERO dollars in existence. Actually, there probably aren't quite enough dollars in existence to pay off the national debt. They loan you the dollars, they never give you the interest to pay it back. That's why the National Debt has to go up exponentially.

Just remember that: a 5% or 10% increase per year looks like a parabolic curve. NOT a straight line. If you don't understand that, you don't understand the danger we are all in, living in an economy based around fiat currency as we are.

They've actually made cereal boxes bigger while reducing the amount inside.  So you open up a box of cereal and it's half empty ... which they attribute to "settling of contents".

  • A downvote?  Someone on here works for Gatorade or Playdoh?  Just stating the facts.  Don’t shoot the messenger!

  • First of all, the picture shown on the youtube video is deceptive.  The Big Mac never looked like the one on the left.  They've always looked like the one on the right.

However, it is true that the amount of product has been reduced over time.  This is especially evident if you try to cook using older cook books.  The cook book will ask for various items according to the units that were typically sold.  For example, a recipe may call for 8 oz of something, but it no longer comes in 8 oz packages, so you either have to buy two packages and use only part of the second or buy one package and be short on that ingredient.

We were just discussing this at the in-laws last week.  Specifically Chips Ahoy, Ring Dings and Yodels.  Smaller, but more expensive.

  • It's rampant.  Mounds bars, Almond Joy, Snickers, Hershey bars, and that's just candy.  (There are some times when one just has to have a Mounds bar.  Nothing less will do.  So there. :laugh2: )

What is really vile is what they've done to Santitas tortilla chips.  They used to have these monstrous bags emblazoned in large letters and numbers, "$2 ONLY".  Well, I guess TPTB at the Santitas company were having trouble making the payments on their SUVs and bass boats, so guess what, the bag got smaller --- much smaller! --- and the slogan was changed to "$2.29 ONLY".  I bought a bag the other day, under protest, because they are the ultimate minimalist crisp snack.

Thank God for Dollar Tree, truly the retiree's and the workingman's friend.  Their Fast Bites cheeseburgers and sausage biscuits are awesome for what they are.  (I grew fond of cheeseburgers with TVP in college, de gustibus non est disputandum, they're amazingly similar to White Castles, only bigger and more substantial.  And two of their Banquet dinners with a vegetable on the side, presto, instant supper.  Many evenings, when I am summoned to go care for my father, that is my evening meal.  Never underestimate the strength of a man with his microwave and can opener.)
