Second Plenary Council of Baltimore, 1866:
states that public schools lead to "...that corruption of morals which we have to deplore in those of tender years."
Second Provincial Council of Oregon, 1881:
“The wickedness of the present Public School system consists in the exclusion of religious principle, of the worship of God, of the teaching of Christianity; it consists in the selection of bad and pernicious schoolbooks; it consists in the carelessness of teachers with regard to the language of their pupils.”
"swearing, cursing, and profane expressions are distinctive marks of public school children."
Catholic World, 1886:
“Secular education, as it is called, has had time even with us to prove itself; and what is the result? The infidelity, communism, and socialism of the age; lack of reverence for all that has been considered sacred; the immorality of society that might shame a Sodom and Gomorrah—these are the fruits of secular education.”
Fr. Walker of New York, 1870-1880’s:
"The public schools are the nurseries of vice. They are godless schools and they who send their children to them cannot expect the mercy of God. I would as soon administer the sacraments to a dog as to such Catholics."
Fr. Phelan, October 17, 1873:
“The children of the public schools turn out to be learned horse-thieves, scholastic counterfeiters, and well versed in all the schemes of deviltry. I frankly confess that Catholics stand before the country as the enemies of the Public Schools.”
“They would as soon send their children into a pest house, or bury them, as let them go to the public schools. They were afraid the child who left home in the morning would come back with something in its heart as black as hell."
