  • Recently I've been thinking about how in popular culture the devil is made out to be the 'king' of hell and that he and his angels will torture the damned... This seems to be wrong. Aren't they all going to be companions to the damned in suffering?

Any one know the teachings of the Fathers/infallible doctrines? I haven't had much time lately to read books..

  • Of course they're also suffering in Hell.  As to whether they have some inverted diabolical hierarchy, it would be different from a normal hierarchy.  Souls of the damned are all in non serviam mode, so if they weren't going to serve God, they're not about to become subordinate to Satan either, unless they're forced to by God, so it's probably more of a chaotic free-for-all.  If forced by God to be subordinate (mirroring the order that they had before they fell), this would undoubtedly be contributing to their torments.

I was reading preparation for death by Saint Alphonsus. Apparently one of the punishments is immobility. So the damned will be "packed like sheep", whatever way they land in hell, they stay for ever, for all eternity.

So I'm not sure how 'subordination' would fit here, if they can indeed not move whatsoever.
