  • I wonder who is responsible for the translation here?

I have heard that there are serious attempts by some governments to encourage large(r) families, out of dire economic necessity.

When you consider that Russia was the first country to legalise abortion with all the terrible consequences we should not be surprised that these incentives are proposed. More to the point however is how to get them to be taken advantage of, because most of these efforts have failed.

    A few stats:

    U.S. / Australia 1.9 births per woman
    Russia     1.5 births  per woman
    Italy        1.4 births per woman

    Italy    17.4% of pregnancies aborted
    Australia    20.2% of pregnancies aborted
    U.S.     22.6% of pregnancies aborted
    Russia     44.7% of pregnancies aborted

    An excerpt from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_in_Russia

    Quote
    Recent efforts[edit]

The abortion issue has gained renewed attention in 2011 in a debate that the New York Times says "has begun to sound like the debate in the United States".[21] Parliament passed and President Dmitri Medvedev signed several restrictions on abortion into law to combat "a falling birthrate" and "plunging population".[21] The restrictions include requiring abortion providers to devote 10% of advertising costs to describing the dangers of abortion to a woman's health and make it illegal to describe abortion as a safe medical procedure. Medvedev's wife Svetlana Medvedeva has taken up the pro-life cause in Russia in a weeklong national campaign against abortion called "Give Me Life!" and a "Day of Family, Love and Faithfulness" by her Foundation for Social and Cultural Initiatives in conjunction with the Russian Orthodox Church.[21]

    Statistics[edit]

Despite a significant reduction in the abortion to birth ratio since the mid-1990s, the countries of the former Soviet Union maintain the highest rate of abortions in the world. In 2001, 1.31 million children were born in Russia, while 2.11 million abortions were performed.[22] In 2005, 1.6 million abortions were registered in Russia;[4] 20% of these involved girls under the age of 18.[23] Official statistics put the number at 989,000 in 2011,[4] though Russian pro-life activists say that number is much higher.[21]

They can afford to be generous because women are unlikely to take up the offer.

    The only solution is conversion.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • In Russia and Europe, their national ethnicity and national identity go hand-in-hand.

Therefore, more Russians, the more Russia is Russian.

Contrast that to America.  There is no national ethnicity, since we're all from different places in the world.  Therefore there is no national identity.  Plus, national identity is being constantly torn down by liberals.  The closest thing resembling America as a whole is seen at Wal-Mart.

This land is basically a big giant resource to be exploited by everyone.  That's how the North American Continent has been treated, anyway.

    Where did you get this?

    I thought you were single.

A few of the points I can understand (being charged more for 2 seats if you're not skinny enough) but large families being  not allowed to own land? Not allowed to own a home? That's not even funny in a satire sort of way.

In my experience (feel free to dismiss; I only have 5 children myself) the government is more "generous" when you have a large family. So the part about healthcare, etc. I don't follow at all.

Most of the large families I know live in homes they bought (or built), on acreage.

And regarding "Those with excess children shall be considered malingerers, and are ineligible for unemployment, government benefits, or tax rebates."

    What are you smoking?

    Sad but true
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • No one in the U.S. is allowed to own anything save what they can carry with them as it is. Anyone who would dispute this can try the interesting experiment of not paying their rent, sorry I mean "property taxes" to the extortionists & find out what happens next. It's the same with everything, in fact if they haven't expressly commanded that something be done there's a very good chance that that something is categorically forbidden. It's all for them & their masters. That's why it's best to do no more than duty requires, after that is done one ought to enjoy life, read some interesting books, listen to nice music, have a drop of fine Polish vodka. It'll all be over soon enough anyhow. The general population is about as bad as the tyrants who rule them, just stay away from the open sewer of this modern society & one will be reasonably happy. As for anyone who would say "we've got to do something to put it right!" I would ask what that would be. No amount of paint & ornaments will make a pile of rotting dung into a beautiful palace. In the short span of years any of us writing here have to live it will only worsen. Criminal though he was I've always liked Kelly's last words "Oh well, I suppose it had to come to this....such is life." Indeed, such is life. As Bishop Williamson said, (paraphrasing him) all that matters is that we die a good death.

  • Try claiming those things in Russia. :roll-laugh2:  By the time you have dealt with their bureaucracy you will wish you hadn't bothered.

Russia is not a large family friendly place.  Where are you going to live for a start?  All the apartments are built for 1 and 2 child families.  There are no houses that you can afford inside the city limits unless you're making a six figure salary.  If you move out of town you cannot commute for 6 months of the year because of snow and ice which are not cleared.

If you are a writer or have investment income to fall back on great, but large families in Russia are as rare as rockin-horse poop in reality so of course the government can afford to offer fantastic benefits because they rarely pay them.

  • This is how it works in "family friendly" Russia and the rest of the former Soviet Union when you have kids or want public services.

The only former Soviet countries that are not corrupt like this are Estonia and one or two others.

I'm not offended at all...just scratching my head as to why you think that's funny, and certainly not laughing at your "joke" myself.

Some things are "funny because it's true", or "funny because it's almost true".
Making fun of Apple releasing an expensive toaster or something is an example of this -- we recognize all too much truth in it, so we laugh.
When some characters in Veggie Tales make fun of Starbucks, advertising a coffee shop slogan, "Why pay a little for coffee, when you can pay a lot." is funny for this reason.

Other things are "ironic" funny -- funny because it's the EXACT OPPOSITE of what is true or what we'd expect. Groundskeeper Willie (from The Simpsons, for those not familiar) ripping off his clothes to reveal a muscular chest and six-pack is an example of this. He seems older and kind of hunched over when he has his clothes on.

Your post in question was neither.

You start out with a kind of satire, so I'm expecting "funny because it's true" or an exaggeration of what is true. But then you threw out (among other things) the suggestion that the government is (or is close to) not giving any benefits to larger families.

That comes across as ignorant to me, not funny. Sorry I'm not a better sport! :)

I guess your clumsy combination of exaggeration, satire and irony just didn't work.

I just wanted to point out that you must not have much experience in this regard, because you're way off in your satire.

I guess some people should put down the seltzer water, rubber chicken and clown nose before someone gets hurt. Not everyone is funny, though many people try. :)
