The French Revolution gave birth to the Total State. Whatever one may think of libertarian ideas, they are at the opposite pole from those that inspired and underlay the French Revolution.
This is not some arcane matter requiring decades of research and careful reflection. It involves elementary facts of history.
Wrong, the French Revolution gave birth to the libertarian ideology of freedom, egalitarianism, and free trade.
In fact the French Revolution was all about, "The people being free." Even though it came under the absolute power of Robespierre, that was the guiding philosophy.
"Mankind will not be free until the last king has been strangled with the entrails of the last priest." Diderot
"Wipe out the infamy [Catholic Church]!" Voltaire
"Mankind is born free but everywhere he is in chains." Rosseau
Voltaire also embraced free trade as the way to world government. He decried policies that let nations "destroy eachother at the extremities of Asia and America." Such policies, he said, made us "enemies of the human race."
