  • I often hear the expression.

    Quote
I am proud of my country
any XYZ reason for being "proud".

But what does being proud really mean? I always thought it was just a tense of pride but a google search tells me otherwise

    Quote
'Pride' is a noun; 'proud' is an adjective

  • Proud & pride are basically just different forms of the same word. In English, the word could have a positive or negative connotation, depending on the context & intention of the speaker. Some other languages don't have this problem because there are multiple words to differentiate between the “good pride” and the vicious pride.

“I'm proud of _____” - feeling happy, glorious, victorious etc. for oneself or others having accomplished/completed something, done the right thing etc. is not necessarily an exercise of the deadly vice of pride. For example, it's entirely normal and wholesome for parents to feel “proud” for their infant when they observe him speaking his first words or taking his first steps.

  • No, it's not necessarily related to the vice of pride.  Being proud of your Catholic faith or your country (where applicable) is not a vice but a virtue, generally speaking, although it could subtly transition or filter into taking pride in yourself (for belonging to the Catholic Church or the faith).  Similarly, you can be proud of your children if they perform some act of virtue, which means that you're rejoicing in what you see and are happy about it, but then this could subtly filter into patting oneself on the back for being a good parent.  It's even legitimate to be proud of yourself, if by that you mean you take happiness or pleasure in having done something good.  I'm proud of myself for, say, not having used cigarettes for a week (if you're trying to quit) or for doing something good for someone, so long as you don't attribute the goodness directly to yourself but refer it to God.  Humility is truth, and so it's a false humility (and sometimes, ironically, even a disguised subtle form of pride) to not acknowledge the goodness even in yourself (provided you realize that it ultimately all comes from God).

  • As a practical matter, I make a conscious attempt to replace "proud" with "thankful".  You can't go wrong that way.
