We keep hearing more and more of these stories...

It reminds me of something that I saw going on two days ago, but I sadly don't have quite as much details as this article.  I still really think I should post it somewhere though:

I was driving over to a local strip mall (Blockbuster, hallmark, etc.), and it was mid-to-late afternoon, probably around 3ish.  As I was pulling up to stoplight, I noticed a policeman with one of those orange construction worker vests on, standing off to side, watching the traffic.  As I pulled into the right turn lane, he grabbed at his shoulder (at a radio, I'd guess) and began talking.

When I finally pulled into the complex and over the hill, I noticed a squad car and several civilian cars pulled over to the side.  One officer was standing on the sidewalk watching the whole affair, and a second was talking to a driver in a van (non-police).  As I waited to pass by (not much room with the pulled over cars), the second (or is it the third now =P) officer walked to the back of the van and took down the license plate info.  It didn't appear that the handful of cars that had been pulled over were in any sort of accident.

Finally, I was able to pass them, and the policeman writing down license plates numbers gave me a dirty glare.  I went about my business, dreading the fact that I'd have to pass them again.

When I drove back that way, several new cars were pulled over, and the police were doing the same routine as before.  Luckily, coming from the other direction, I was able to squeeze by quite quickly.  I stopped at one other store in the shopping complex and then left through a different exit, not wanting to pass the scene a third time.

While waiting for the cross traffic, I watched the policeman standing at the intersection.  Every n-th car that passed him, he'd make them stop and would bend over to talk to them.  He motioned to where the other vehicles had been pulled over, and the new people (new victims?) would drive that way to be hassled by the police.

I couldn't tell any particular pattern as far as the vehicles are concerned.  It wasn't as if they were all the same brand and model.  Trying to consider the facts, the only recognisable pattern is that all of the cars were "dark" in colour.  Several were black, and I think the van may have been dark green.

Glad to escape that one...

Can anyone think of what the police could have been doing?
