  • Great thread idea!

This guy is only a pro basketball player, but his example will (maybe?) resonate with some seculars who would never look at the issue from a Catholic perspective, and might inspire others of that sort to resist?

He was willing to give up $200 million to remain unvaccinated.

N.J.’s Kyrie Irving talks COVID-19 vaccine, Nets’ decision to move on without him | How much he stands to lose

By Mike Rosenstein | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

The Brooklyn Nets are moving on without Kyrie Irving, and the seven-time All-Star is OK with that.
Irving, who grew up in West Orange, N.J., has not received the COVID-19 vaccine. As a result, he is not eligible to play in basketball games in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles, based on local coronavirus protocol.
Irving talked about his stance Wednesday on Instagram Live. Among the highlights, per ESPN:

“I chose to be unvaccinated, and that was my choice, and I would ask you all to just respect that choice. ... You really think I want to lose money? You think I really want to give up on my dream to go after a championship? You think I really just want to give up my job? Think I really just want to sit at home and not go after the things with my teammates that I have been able to grow with, to learn with, to learn that it takes sacrifice in this space. ... You think I want to give up my livelihood because of a mandate, because I don’t have accommodations, because I am unvaccinated? Come on.”

So just how much could this end up costing Irving? The Athletic’s Shams Charania appeared Wednesday on “The Glue Guys” podcast. Per Yahoo Sports:

“(Irving) was willing to sacrifice, at the end of the day, $16 million in salary this upcoming year and $186 million as far as an extension that he will not be offered now.”

But Irving tried to make it clear that his vaccine stance is more than just a business decision.

“This is my life. I get to do whatever I want with this, this is one body that I get here. And you are telling me what to do with my body. ... This has everything to do with what is going on in our world. And I am being grouped into something that is bigger than just the game of basketball. ... It is not about being anti-vax or about being on one side or the other. It is just really about being true to what feels good for me. ... I know the consequences of the decisions that I make with my life.”

Irving had not spoken publicly since Sept. 27, when he attended Nets’ media day virtually. But on Wednesday the guard made it clear that he’s not walking off into the sunset.

“I am going to just continue to stay in shape, be ready to play, be ready to rock out with my teammates and just be part of this whole thing. This is not a political thing; this is not about the NBA, not about any organization. This is about my life and what I am choosing to do. ... Nobody is hijacking this voice. ... And no, I am not retiring. ... I am not going and leaving this game like this.”

On Tuesday, Nets general manager Sean Marks announced the team wouldn’t be held hostage by Irving’s vaccination status.

“Given the evolving nature of the situation and after thorough deliberation, we have decided Kyrie Irving will not play or practice with the team until he is eligible to be a full participant. Kyrie has made a personal choice, and we respect his individual right to choose. Currently the choice restricts his ability to be a full-time member of the team, and we will not permit any member of our team to participate with part-time availability. It is imperative that we continue to build chemistry as a team and remain true to our long-established values of togetherness and sacrifice. Our championship goals for the season have not changed, and to achieve these goals each member of our organization must pull in the same direction. We are excited for the start of the season and look forward to a successful campaign that will make the borough of Brooklyn proud.”

  • Chicago Police Union Head Urges Members To Defy Vaccine Mandate, Warns Force To Shrink 50% This Weekend

    Thursday, Oct 14, 2021 - 09:00 AM

By Isabel van Brugen of Epoch Times,
The head of the Chicago police officers union on Tuesday called on its members to refuse to comply with the city’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, which is set to take effect on Friday.

    Quote
“Do not fill out the portal information,” Chicago Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara said in a video to officers posted on YouTube.
“I’ve made my status very clear as far as the vaccine, but I do not believe the city has the authority to mandate that to anybody—let alone that information about your medical history.”

Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 President John Catanzara speaks to reporters at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse in Chicago on Aug. 10, 2021. (Ashlee Rezin/Chicago Sun-Times via AP)
According to Catanzara, the police union is preparing a lawsuit against the city if Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration attempts to enforce the mandate, which requires city workers to report their vaccine status by Friday or be placed on a “no-pay” status.
    Quote
“It’s safe to say that the city of Chicago will have a police force at 50 percent or less for this weekend coming up,” Catanzara said.

The Epoch Times has contacted Lightfoot’s office for comment.

“I can guarantee you that no-pay status will not last more than 30 days,” Catanzara said on Tuesday. “There’s no way they’re going to be able to sustain a police department workforce at 50 percent capacity or less for more than seven days without something budging.”

    Quote
“This is very clearly not a job action,” he added, “not a call for a strike.”
The police union head in his video instructs members to file for exemptions to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine but to not enter that information into the city’s vaccine portal.
Responding to Cantanzara’s video during a press briefing on Wednesday, Lightfoot accused him of spreading false information, dismissing most of his statements as “untrue or patently false.”
“What we’re focused on is making sure that we maximize the opportunity to create a very safe workplace,” Lightfoot told reporters. “The data is very clear. It is unfortunate that the FOP leadership has chosen to put out a counter narrative. But the fact of the matter is, if you are not vaccinated, you are playing with your life, the life of your family, the life of your colleagues, and members of the public.”
Shortly after Lightfoot announced the measures in August, Catanzara compared the requirement to how nαzιs told their victims the gas chambers were showers.

    Quote
“This ain’t nαzι [expletive] Germany … ‘Step into the [expletive] showers, the pills won’t hurt you,’” he told the Chicago Sun-Times, before quickly apologizing for his choice of words, saying he was not trying to link vaccinations to what happened during the h0Ɩ0cαųst.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has maintained that the known benefits of the COVID-19 vaccinations “outweigh the known and potential risks.”

  • I have been noticing a TON of 'now hiring' signs at local businesses in my town since employers started the jab mandates.

  • Keep in mind Yuendumu is 300kms from Alice Springs. These people would have been first cab off the rank for the "Health" Dept.
      https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/7468293/vax-rollout-mugged-in-remote-parts-of-nt/

(clip) Mr Gunner cited Yuendumu, in Central Australia, as an example of a community where the rollout was lagging.

Health workers have visited the community of 700 people six times since the rollout started in the NT, but few residents have had a jab.
Meetings have been held with leaders and elders and vaccine information has been provided in the local language, along with vaccination incentives.
"Despite all of these blitz efforts, despite the fact the vaccine has been sitting in the fridge there for months, just 20 per cent of eligible people in Yuendumu have received their first shot.
It is just an unfortunate reality that some Territorians, across the whole territory, have been mugged by misinformation." Mr Gunner said.

Some, like Alpurrurulam in the Barkly region and Ikuntji in Central Australia, have first-dose rates below 15 per cent.

I have searched for Irving's religion (funny that his first name literally means "Lord") and it looks like that he is next to the Islam - like a bunch of NBA players were - but it's nice too see that some other people are resisting.

  • Washington State fires football coach Nick Rolovich, 4 assistants for refusing state-mandated COVID-19 vaccine
    play

Rolovich out as Washington State football coach (1:27)
    6:57 PM CT

    • Kyle BonaguraESPN Staff Writer
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State fired football coach Nick Rolovich and four of his assistants on Monday after they refused to comply with a mandate that all state employees be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee had set a deadline of Monday for thousands of state employees, including the Cougars' coaches, to be vaccinated against the coronavirus or risk losing their jobs.

"The noncompliance with this requirement renders [Rolovich] ineligible to be employed at Washington State University and therefore can no longer fulfill the duties as a head coach of our football program effective immediately," Washington State athletic director Pat Chun said during a Monday night news conference. "It is disheartening to be here today. Our football team is hurting. Our WSU community is fractured. Today will have a lasting impact on the young men on our team and the remaining coaches and staff."
Also fired were assistant coaches Ricky Logo, John Richardson, Craig Stutzmann and Mark Weber after they did not comply with Inslee's proclamation that was issued in August. Chun said there might be no precedent for a team losing its head coach and so many assistants in the middle of a season.
Defensive coordinator Jake Dickert has been elevated to interim head coach. His first game in charge will be Saturday at home against BYU.
Rolovich was the highest-paid state employee, with an annual salary of more than $3 million in a contract that runs through 2025. He had said he wouldn't get vaccinated but has declined to provide clarity when asked repeatedly for weeks to expand upon the reasoning for his refusal. The university provided multiple educational sessions for its coaches and staff about the vaccine, its efficacy and the process.
Chun confirmed Rolovich's departure will be characterized as a "for cause" separation due to his inability to meet the requirements outlined in his contract. As such, he will not continue to be paid as per the terms of his contract.
Rolovich, 42, initially said in mid-August he would comply with the vaccine mandate, but later confirmed he applied for a religious exemption. He has not specified his religious beliefs.
The university used a blind evaluation process, meaning the two-person committee that evaluated Rolovich's request did not have access to any identifying information while making its determination.
The committee returned its ruling Monday, and while Chun did not explicitly confirm how the committee ruled, it can be inferred the religious exemption was granted at that stage of the process because Chun said Rolovich's "accommodation request" was denied. The second step of the process, after the religious exemption was granted, would be for the supervisor -- in this case Chun and likely other university leaders -- to decide if accommodations could be made for Rolovich to fulfill all his contractual obligations.
Chun saying Rolovich's accommodation request was denied indicates an evaluation was made beyond the initial exemption request.
Rolovich was informed of his dismissal by Chun on Monday afternoon and left immediately after their meeting concluded, without addressing the team, Chun said. After meeting with Rolovich, Chun addressed the players in a meeting that was met with mixed emotions.
"Their responses were what you would expect out of a bunch of college-age young people that lost their head coach and a bunch of position coaches as well," Chun said. "That's a very close-knit group. They handled it maturely, but without a doubt there's a lot of disappointment, sadness, anger. It's a room filled with over 120 young people, so it's going to be the full spectrum of emotions. But they listened and they were all there."
It's unclear who will fill the five vacated spots on staff, which could be difficult considering the timing and that WSU's run-and-shoot offense isn't widely used (Rolovich, Stutzmann and Weber are offensive coaches).
"It's a very detailed, intricate offense, this run-and-shoot, and to get the right coaches that can help assist -- there just aren't a lot of people on the streets right now," Chun said. "We've been working on this for a couple weeks, just in case, and we'll go forward with a couple of those."
Rolovich revealed in July that he would not get vaccinated and couldn't attend Pac-12 media day in person because of it. He was the only unvaccinated head coach in the Pac-12 and had worn a mask during games.
Unlike last season -- when COVID-19 cases swept through major college football, postponing and canceling games weekly -- no games have needed to be rescheduled because of a coronavirus outbreak.

Rolovich was hired from Hawaii two years ago, after Mike Leach left for Mississippi State, and led Washington State to a 1-3 record in the Pac-12 in a 2020 season cut short because of the pandemic. Washington State has won its past three games and is 4-3 this season, including a 34-31 win over Stanford last Saturday. Rolovich finishes with a 5-6 record at the Pullman campus in southeastern Washington.
Dickert is in his second season as Washington State's defensive coordinator after three seasons at Wyoming. He has not previously been a head coach.
Washington State president Kirk Schulz said nearly 90% of WSU employees and 97% of students had been vaccinated.
Players stood up for Rolovich as the season progressed.
Cougars quarterback Jayden de Laura told a sideline reporter after Saturday's victory: "Stop hating on Rolo. We love him.''
Wide receiver Travell hαɾɾιs commended Rolovich following the game for being a "players' coach.''
"He's a coach we all love to play for,'' hαɾɾιs said.
