  • My daughter is trying to defend the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph on a supposedly Catholic Homeschool site.
Do any of you know where I can find and article on the actual birth of our Lord, where tadition teaches us that the Blessed Virgin did not go through the agonies of child birth due to the fact that she was born without original sin?
The girl giving her the most trouble is a student at Franciscan University in Stupidville (Stuebenville) and they have never heard of any of the Churches teachings and think that this story of Mary and Joseph is some sort of soap opera with an unplanned pregnancy where Joseph is a cad who wants to dump the girl.

    That good?

There is a verse in scripture where a midwive "checks" to see if Mary is a virgin after Christ's birth, and the midwive is shocked that Mary is... "physically unstrained" in the lower regions, but a woman's lower regions should be "strained" after giving birth.

Christ phased right through his mom's body, just like He phased through the sepulchre.

This is correct, and it is one of the many little problems with the film of Gibson's (which is good overall).  In the film, the stone is rolled back, then He rises and walks out.

  • I can't spot stuff like that in a movie.  TV stupidifies me.  Me zombie. :tv-disturbed:

Are there other things you've spotted in The Passion?  It might help me out to be able to point them out next time I watch it.

It is not in Scripture, but I think perhaps it can be found in the apocryphal work called the Protoevangelium of James.

  • I am always turned off by such indescreet, though sometimes pious, "wanderings of the imagination".

Just like this movie that just came out, "The Nativity".

I don't want to see Mary going to Shopko and buying a pregnancy test. Nor do I want to meditate on details that are best left reverently obscure, as God meant them to be (they aren't in Scripture for a reason!)

I hope you understand what I mean. Some things are best passed over out of reverence and respect.

    God bless,

    Matthew

P.S. I'm sure Mary doesn't buy a pregnancy test in the movie, but she DOES get accused of breaking her vow of virginity -- and nobody can be sure that actually happened.

  • It reminds me of this one Christmas play I saw at a Lutheran college -- Joseph's mother was all in a tizzy after she found out Mary was pregnant. She was actually accusing her of being a bad woman, etc.

I was quite upset at having to sit through that.
