    It's an objectively good song. And you're right, the lyrics depict some terrified onlooker witnessing the events of some satanic ritual unfold before him. A lot of these bands tend to utilize the lyrics in a similar fashion (early Candlemass, Slayer's "Silent Scream" literally exposes the horrors of abortion, and "South of Heaven" lyrically calls out the evils of modernity). Whether or not this glorifies Satanism is something else entirely, as I certainly viewed it that way when I was a teenager. While the music itself tends to get the irascible appetites wound up, making it difficult to avoid anger and impatience, so I would warn against exposing oneself to it.

    That said, I don't get the context either. But the song has been in my head all night now. :laugh1:

    • Yes, I agree with that exactly, but have seen others who say that all these references to such things are caused because the band dabbles in black magic or something like that. These are usually the same people who say rock music is 100% Satanic, though. I do think there are dangers to such music because of, as you said, what it does to the appetites... but I don't think everyone who writes or sings such music is directly worshiping Satan. As for Slayer... Hanneman and King's solos were always slightly too distorted and lacking melody for my taste, but I totally agree with that assessment of South of Heaven, which is one of the few I did like. 

    And yes, same. Glad I'm not the only one, that riff is dang catchy for sure.

    I can certainly see why they would dismiss the genre as overtly satanic, as many of these bands do in fact dabble in this crap or at least lead hedonistic lives. But whether that has to do with the style of music itself, or merely the expression, is debatable.

    The lyrics for "Samarithan" by Candlemass are overtly about the virtue of charity (I would debate Christian charity) while the style itself is a slow and lumbering Metal.

    I wouldn't completely dismiss black metal, although I don't encourage people to listen to it, as Dr. Steve Turley had a good video discussing it, and other forms of metal, as a means of countering modernity.

    I'm kinda baffled that we're discussing heavy metal and music that at best promotes degenerate lifestyle and sinful behavior and at worst is straight satanic... on a forum dedicated to the traditional Catholic Faith.
    Its strange world we live in.

    Right? It's absolutely insane to see on this forum. It may be because this was the music people grew up with.
