  • So says the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC).

Church Militant reports that in 2016, Stephen Michalak, then Grand Master of South Australia and the Northern Territory (present status unknown), and a practicing Roman Catholic, wrote the ACBC for a definitive statement on whether Catholics could be members of a Masonic Lodge.  In a letter from July 2017, the ACBC responds, in part, with: "I can reiterate a directive first made by the bishops conference in 1984 and affirmed this year. No penalty attaches to Catholic membership of the Masonic Order."

In his letter, Michalak complained:  "There is no consistency.... One parish priest will welcome [Masonic] brethren to receive the Sacraments, while another will condemn the action."  <---This is true.  And therein lies the problem.  And here comes the ACBC, but instead of throwing a cold bucket of water on this fire, they throw gasoline.

Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.
