More Male Saints than Female

  • Caveat:  I got this statistic from Grok:  male 6000 to 7000 saints   female 2400 to 4000 saints

Why are there more male saints than female?  Are men holier by nature?  Are women more wicked by nature?  Is it because the Church is run by men and show bias?  Is it because women have no voice in the canonization process?  Do men more closely resemble Christ because they are male like Him and maybe it's easier to be holy?  Are men being given an unfair advantage in salvation?  Do women have to do more to be saved? Are more female saints than male removed from the calendar?

These questions do not reflect my own beliefs.  I'm curious what others think.  Thanks.

  • Incomplete statistics, first of all.  I assume your numbers are the the count of canonized saints?  But there's an untold # (millions) of martyrs from the first 3 centuries that are undocuмented.  Only God knows.  Then you have the millions of uncanonized saints who lived in convents, monasteries and religious houses over 2,000 years that (by God's will) were never canonized.  But that doesn't mean they weren't saints with great sanctity.  Then you have (again millions and millions) of souls who were martyred under communism in the 1900s (and continuing still today).  There's no way to compare the unknown.

I apologize.  I thought it was clear I was only referring to canonized saints.

  • Ok, well your questions are unfair if you're only going to talk about canonization.  You're almost questioning God's decisions.  It's borderline heretical.

It is hard for this to not sound rude, especially via such a medium, but I don't care.  If people want to consider and discuss it, by all means do so.  Cheers.

Pax, I think she just wants to start a discussion on these topics.  I don't think she is meaning anything heretical (not even borderline) or is questioning God's decision.

I think (I am open to others ideas) when we are born, we have certain characteristics that are determined by our gender as well as are temperament.  These things come with a certain set of vices and virtues.  We are asked by God to discover who we are.  Gender is the first one that is easy to determine.  As we grow we learn what vices we tend to and then we improve them accordingly by using the Sacraments of the Catholic Church.  This is just how I think about it based on reading the Saints and other Catholic stuff.

There's nothing to discuss.  God decides who is canonized and who isn't.  He provides the inspiration and the miracles to confirm the Church's decision.  Without miracles, nobody is canonized.

To question who is or isn't canonized is a DIRECT questioning of God's decision.

I cannot speak for her, but I think her intent was to start a discussion on how easy it is for one gender or the other to become a saint (with little s, I am not trying to canonize anyone)  Anyway, I think she was just using the already canonized Saints as an example.

It's an unanswerable question because nobody (except God) knows how many saints exist.

The broader question - it is easier for a man or a woman to get to heaven?  Answer:  Neither.  Everyone, whether man, woman, young, old, rich, poor, healthy, sick, etc, etc - every person on earth is given sufficient graces to get to heaven.  You either cooperate with grace, or you don't.  And only God knows who did or didn't cooperate.

Ok. Then why would some one start a thread like this in the first place?

You all seem to be saying its useless (including the OP).

I'm not sure why the Church canonized more men than women.  What do you think?

  • Simple answer, men are more public than women.
