  • Just think, in years past con-men exploited the faith of "simple peasants" to sell them fake relics, fake indulgences, etc.

Isn't it great we've come so far -- now we worship SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY instead, that is a true religion for some people, such that they are quick to believe science can work ANY miracle.

Only it can't. And projects like this are proof of both the gullibility of the science-worshiping masses, as well as the limits of science.

Couldn't agree with you more Matthew. Such has been this worship of 'science' that it can now even be seen as the instrument that brought the Catholic Church to its present state.
To understand why I put science in brackets one must know the difference between 'science' and science.

There is a real science, ‘Something that is direct, observable, physical, natural, repeatable, unambiguous and comprehensive'

and there is modern science:  'hearsay, popular opinion, “expert” testimony, majority view, personal conviction, organisational ruling, conventional usage, superficial analogy, appeal to “simplicity”, or other indirect means of persuasion.'

Catholicism has its roots in origins, the origin of the Earth, sun, moon, stars and the universe. Then it is the origin of all life, flora and fauna and finally intelligent mankind. Our whole faith is wrapped up in God creating all this from nothing. The Church's dogmas state God created all, complete according to their kind. Thus Catholic origins are divine and supernatural.

But along came men in the 17th century with the new 'science' of origins. This new science eliminated any supernatural cause in origins, putting forward their proposed causes for the universe, Earth and life. Now to get something from nothing to form and evolve the perfect life forms we see on Earth and all the raw materials that mankind needs for his existence, is to make 'science' a god. You see to do all the above, nothing to our world, only a 'science' god could do.

Now from the 17th century we had two gods, the 'science' god of natural miracles and the Catholic God the divine Creator

Now real history records this 'science' god removed the real God from the belief system of millions. We call these 'science' god believers atheists.

But worse was to come. In 1835 popes were conned into accepting the first 'science' proof that heliocentrism was true when it wass not scientifically. Once this happened the popes then had to accept the first scientifically miraculous theory, the evolution of the solar system they said Scripture revealed. Then came the evolution of flora, fauna and mankind. None of these 'theories' were or could be condemned by the Church because popes were terrified to make another huge 'mistake' as they did with condemning heliocentrism. As a result of this, popes began to make their God responsible for the miracles needed for the natural god to get sponges to dinosaurs and then into men. In other words, churchmen did their bit to make the 'science' god a fact while denying the Catholic God's instant complete creation from nothing. With both Church and State now promoting the new 'science' god, who believes in that supernatural cause of origins anymore.

Proof of this is the current Pope Francis who laughed at the revelations of Genesis telling all the Catholic God is not a magician who can wave a wand and create something complete.

  • If you really think deeply about this, it will strike you (as it did me).

People are willing to believe that Science can do anything, given enough resources and time:

    Create life
    Create intelligence/AI
    Perfect existing forms of life
    Create free, clean, cheap energy
    Create a heaven on earth
Men will live on other planets/moons
Man can literally transform the universe to suit his needs -- terraforming, Dyson spheres, interstellar travel, etc.
    etc.

Just like we have faith in God, and believe God is omnipotent, thus modern science-worshipers believe science is the answer for everything, that science has no limits, as long as we're patient enough.

  • Yes, I find the strange hysteria about artificial intelligence to be most puzzling. To think that a computer can be programmed to think like a human being is pretty laughable, and yet people think it's going to happen one day. If you don't believe me, try to carry on a conversation with your nearest Alexa device. That thing represents multiple decades of the most rapid, amazing technological advancement the world has ever seen, and it still can't understand even the most basic sentence. Billions of dollars of research, and the combined genius of the most advanced minds of the human race, and for what? So that it can give you the same response to every question you ask it: "I'm sorry, I didn't understand your question."

  • It's a basic philosophical problem.

Nothing can transcend its own nature.

No matter how smart you are, you can't write a computer program that can come out of the computer and be "real" with everything else out here in the real world.

No matter how badly you're losing in a Monopoly game, any riches/debt is sandboxed in the "game world". You won't find your real-world checking account affected (for good or ill) from the outcome of a Monopoly game -- not if you tried for 1 trillion years.

Likewise, something 100% physical can't transcend the physical world, or have an INTELLECT. Intus legere is to "read within" or to be able to perceive the essence of individual things. Goodness, evil, justice, chair-ness, etc.

Pretty much ANYTHING abstract is in this category -- including language. Each word is an abstraction, or concept, of something that exists in the real world.

Humans have this wonderful "intellect" which made them the kings of the physical world, because we are hybrid creatures having an IMMATERIAL soul. That is why we can wrap our minds around, and completely understand even the essence of, material things. No animals can do this.

The angels are even more powerful, because they don't have a meat-brain to get in the way of complete intellection. Angels don't even reason (which is slow and plodding, and requires a meat-brain and expending of glucose), because their intellect is more advanced.

And guess where our Reason and Free Will come from? Our soul. Our passions come from our body -- and that is what we share with the brute beasts: anger, happiness, fear, pleasure, etc.

  • Here are a few examples of this drug called 'science.'

‘We may have no idea what Professor Hawking does – but everyone knows it is damned clever stuff. So dauntingly clever that I suspect a hefty percentage of the 25 million copies of his book A Brief History of Time, still remain unopened since it came out. But the sales prove we are, in theory anyway, hungry to learn about his heroic search for the so-called Theory of Everything that will explain once and for all the universe and its purpose.’---R. Gore-Langton: Daily Express, Friday 1st Sept 2000

The above paragraph, found in the English newspaper’s review of the play ‘God and Stephen Hawking,’ illustrates the 'scientific' drug to perfection. As with Satan’s inducement to Adam and Eve that they could know all things like God, Hawking, a professed atheist, invited on to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in Rome in 1986 by the way, has long been promoted as the guru to follow. With no idea what he ‘did’ and without understanding what he wrote, Hawking, Einstein and their ilk are held in awe by the media, the public, even popes in Rome, for their ‘science.’ Theoretical cosmology is now classed as ‘damned clever stuff’ that cannot be understood, which in regard to Catholic ‘faith and science’ offers a paradox. Yes, this belief system, this intellectual drug, long implanted into the minds of mankind, is now virtually impossible to break free from.

‘Then in the sixties [Hawking’s] work on “black holes” proved that, contrary to all received scientific wisdom, matter could go from something to nothing. But if matter could disappear, it was only a short step to theories that the opposite was true, and that the universe as we know it, in all its beauty and complexity, had emerged not from the mind of a Creator God, but from nothing.’[1]

‘One point to note is that there is no problem in principle with creating matter from a vacuum. Matter is just another form of energy, and can be produced if the energy input is balanced by something else. For the universe that “something else” could be negative energy in the gravitational field. If this were the case creating the universe would be like digging a hole – you’d have a pile of dirt (visible matter) balanced by a hole (gravitational field). The progress is miraculous only if you ignore the hole and insist the matter appeared “from nothing.”’[2]

  • Here's more:

‘The Big-Bang theory is only a provisional way-stop in a continuing inquiry into origins. It is possible to imagine a universe that had no beginning in time, and Stephen Hawking has been instrumental in investigating just such a possibility placing the so-called moment of creation off-limits for rational inquiry suggests that the lesson of Galileo has not been learned. Modern biology and neuroscience are other areas of potential conflict between the Church and science. Biologists of the next century will almost certainly create living organisms from inanimate materials. Computers may become fully conscious by any practical test of consciousness in the next century. Human consciousness and memory may also yield to scientific analysis. All these developments will present problems for a theology of the soul grounded in mind-body dualism.’[1]

The ‘Big Bang theory is only provisional.’ Where now Pope Pius XII’s creative act of God? Is that too not provisional now? Note also the ubiquitous assertion that science will ‘almost certainly create living organisms from inanimate materials’ in the next century, when we are all dead and gone of course. This is absolute fantasy, and is based on his belief that it actually occurred in the past. There is trickery at work here. When Raymo and his kind assert that such-and-such a thing will happen in the future, what they want is for us to admit the principle of life from inanimate matter as an established fact now because there isn’t an empirical chance in hell of their ever producing living organisms from inanimate materials in any time. Raymo then tells us that ‘computers of the next century may become fully conscious by any practical test of consciousness.’ Well maybe a monkey’s consciousness. His next delusion, that the human soul will be fully understood by reason, is introduced in a similar way, for, he says, it too ‘may also yield to scientific analysis.’ These presumptions, we must see, are worthless rhetoric and nothing else. Nevertheless, this is how modern science works; how their ideology becomes the accepted ‘scientific’ paradigm, the consensus, accept now that ‘all these developments’ will occur, but not in our lifetime. This is cabbalistic magic, naturalism, not real science.

  • ‘Science is turning into a swamp of deceit: In recent centuries the educated classes have come to believe that knowledge is limited to the sciences while religion and morality are a matter of personal opinion, choice or feeling. This has resulted in people’s understanding of truth. Many now believe that only science provides truth, so scientific evidence is needed to support any claim to knowledge. People in this frame of mind demand scientific evidence that God exists. And since science cannot provide such evidence God can be dismissed or treated as a matter of personal taste. Caught in this mindset, many scientists describe themselves as atheists or agnostics, and given the prestige they enjoy, this cramped view of truth is passed on to students, journalists, politicians, and those influenced by them.

Academic exposes corruption in scientific research:

Professor Michael Hart pointed out that various motives are driving the abuse of science. “Among scientists,” he states, “the primary reasons are money, career advancement, and prestige.” “To pursue their research programmes, scientists need money from governments and foundations. They have learned that satisfying the agenda of both helps funds flow. Thus, they have learned to adopt their research to the desired outcomes.” But “much of peer review had degenerated into pal review that maintains the dominant perspective. Views that challenge that perspective are ruthlessly weeded out.”’ --- Alive newspaper: October 2016.
