I am a newbie here. Here is a question. If a Catholic has a relative that dies and the immediate family of the deceased arranges a funeral at a protestant church, may the Catholic attend such a service in any circuмstances? 

I did run a couple of searches here at Cathinfo trying to dig up dialog on this topic, but I did not find any. I probably just need to better learn how to search.  Can anyone link me to material that will give me insights? I have been told that Catholics are absolutely forbidden to participate in any protestant service. Can anyone shed more light on this?

Yes. This has been discussed on numerous occasions.

You would be permitted to attend as long as you do not to take an active part in the ceremony.
