  • Someone posted this:

Not according to Dignitatis humanae, which explicitly "leaves intact the traditional Catholic teaching on the moral duty of individuals and societies towards the true religion and the one Church of Christ" (section 1). You seem to have been reading some second-hand (and perhaps even second-rate) account, falsely claiming that the views of Fr. John Courtney Murray and his ilk were adopted verbatim at Vatican II. Try skipping the warmed-over balderdash and giving a really careful reading to Dignitatis humanae itself.

I think this calls for some discussion!

    I'll start us out:

That's a real slippery slope there -- that's the same argument Protestants give  regarding the Scriptures. "Don't worry about what some dead Catholic bishop thinks -- read them for yourself and get inspired by the Holy Ghost!"

The problem is, most of us are ignorant, under-educated (especially in Theology and other related areas) and unqualified to make a judgement that is worth anything.

Everyone has an opinion -- but opinions are like armpits. Everyone has one, and they stink.

The problem is that the docuмents of Vatican II are Catholic one line, ambiguous or ANTI-Catholic the next. There are contradictions in the docuмents themselves. Error is interspersed with traditional Catholic teaching. Sure, many people have said the same thing -- but only because it's true! And the men who said this are VERY WELL QUALIFIED to say so. They know Church history, Canon Law, theology, philosophy, etc. They aren't trying to justify Vatican II, the recent popes, etc. -- they just tell it like it is.

I'll trust their judgement. I can't be called imprudent or rash for doing so.

    In Christ,

    Matthew

  • I had read recently in a book called Christ Denied by Fr. Paul Wickens a short footnote saying something like that Dignitatis Humanae is difficult to reconcile with Tradition. From what I gather of what I have so far read of DH and about the docuмent, it seems it is indeed difficult to interpret it in light of Tradition. I think it is possible, but I also say it is very difficult to do so. It seems to suggest then that the docuмent was not written very well to teach about the proper relationship between the Church and the state according to long standing Catholic principles, which are not something that can be thrown away at all without turning away and misleading souls.
