  • There is a Prot( David Hawkins) who keeps claiming that the Benedictine 'Motto" is 'Listen & Obey" I have never heard this. Possibly   someone in the forum will know where he gets that from....
There Is No Such Thing As 'Sede Vacantism'...
nor is there such thing as a 'Feeneyite' or 'Feeneyism'

  • Never heard of it being used as their motto, but the rule of St. Benedict certainly teaches listening to and obeying God, normally through your superiors.

Here's a protestant twist on the idea:

    Quote
At the heart of Moses’ response that day, lay his Hebrew understanding of "hearing" being inseparable from "obedience". "To Hear is to Obey". And, in that obedience, not as the shepherd of the flocks, nor the prince of Egypt, but the prophet of God emerged from that burning desert in obedience, to lead his people from captivity to the land of God’s promise. Likewise, when we hear God, it is not an issue of having to decide to obey but rather one of just responding in obedience.

Patience is a conquering virtue. The learned say that, if it not desert you, It vanquishes what force can never reach; Why answer back at every angry speech? No, learn forbearance or, I'll tell you what, You will be taught it, whether you will or not.
    -Geoffrey Chaucer

  • Like many Protestants that are hostile to the Catholic Faith, they twist things to fit their agenda and pass it off to their ignorant followers. I suspect he is taking the motto ora et labora and twisting it all sorts of way until it comes out to whatever they want.

The first word in Benedict’s Rule is ‘listen’. In Latin the words for listen and obey share the same root.

    audire
    obaudire/oboedire
That meaning of the sacred dogmas is ever to be maintained which has once been declared by holy mother church. (Dei Filius)
