A man reportedly
approached a 13-year-old New York City girl from behind last Tuesday and threw an unidentified liquid in her face when she turned around, shouting “This is for you, white b****!”
According to WCBS-TV, the attack is being investigated by the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force.
What are the details?
The 13-year-old girl was exiting an afternoon bus in the Richmond Hill area of Queens when the incident occurred.
“Police said the suspect came up behind the girl and when she turned around, he yelled racial remarks and threw the unknown substance on her,” WCBS reported.
The substance is still unknown, but it reportedly burned the young girl’s eyes.
She was taken to Jamaica Hospital and treated after the attack.
What have people said about the attack?
The teen’s father, Vincent Evangelista, spoke with WCBS, where he detailed his daughter’s strength and character.
“Normally, she travels after school with her buddies,” Evangelista said, “but she was part of an after school program and came back a little later.”
He added that his daughter will continue to take the bus as long as she feels safe doing so.
“She’s going to move on from this incident and not let this in any way affect her in the future,” Evangelista said.
Do we know anything about the suspect?
The suspect, who was reportedly caught on camera by the girl’s aunt, remains at large.
According to WCBS, the suspect is described by police as a “black man, about 30 years old, with a bald head.”
“He was last seen wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt with a red shirt underneath, royal blue pants, and tan and brown boots,” the report noted.
