Tonight, while we were out in the car, my son (age 15) saw a billboard hawking a "Christian" radio station, and started inveighing about all of the people who call themselves Christians, but get rich off of it. I explained to him that the Church in the West was subjected to the Protestant heresy 500 years ago (a fact of which he is well aware), and that since then, it has spawned some bizarre movements, some of them promoting financial prosperity, such as the "Word of Faith" and "prosperity gospel" phenomena. I then told him that, say what people will about the Catholic Church, no priest ever gets into it for the money, and that "believe and grow rich" is utterly alien to Catholicism. One thing I will have to give Francis, is that he does live simply, his apartment in the Vatican is nothing fancy --- no more living space than I have myself, and probably less --- and he dines in the cafeteria with everybody else.
