  • Diocesan boundaries are not necessarily coextensive with state boundaries.  Most states contain more than one diocese, and a few dioceses (Wilmington, Gallup, et al) cross state lines.

  • Many parishes existed long before there were even dioceses.   And those historic parishes are the first to be closed down.

There is no need for all those dioceses and bishops especially nowadays with way less parishes.

The oldest diocese was Baltimore in Maryland.

  • Most parishes were Catholic and vibrant until the dioceses were formed with greedy commie bishops.  Commies infiltrated long before Vatican II.

  • You underestimate how big and rugged this country and its states are.

His Excellency could be the bishop of Texas, 7 hours away from the Cathedral, and still in Texas.

Many dioceses have historically been suppressed and/or combined with other dioceses.  That is where you get all the "titular sees" that bishops without dioceses are given, often when they are consecrated as auxiliaries and so on.

  • How on earth could one bishop manage the entire US? We aren't 13 colonies anymore.  It takes 5 to 8 hours with bathroom breaks and meals to get across my two diocese state.

    This.
Some states have not only too much land area, but a huge population as well. The more people, the more work to do for a bishop. Remember, only a bishop can perform Confirmations!

  • New Order bishops.  How many dioceses have had bankruptcy due to all the sins of the flesh!
