I don't know much about the Papal States. No doubt it had a great influence in the Unification of Italy.
We were there for the great celebrations on the 150 anniversary of the celebration of the Unification of Italy. It was declared a public holiday and my husband and I made our way to for the day to Verona, not knowing what to expect. We wandered around for a while observing the exuberance of the natives. There were information stalls and at one of them was a priest wearing a Roman collar on one of the political parties' displays. I drew my husband's attention to him and we made our way to the table. It was a blessing for us as this was none other than the previous SSPX superior for Northern Italy (no longer SSPX).
This made our day, as we were able to attend Holy Mass at his own chapel which was also his home and we had some very happy visits with great conversations. He on a couple of occasions drove us with him to his Mass in Bolzano in the Tyrol.
in addition we became acquainted with don Francesco Ricossa and attend his Mass when it was in the morning (alternate Sundays) and attended a wonderful address on Pope Pius IX.
So your post, Soubirous, brought back memories. One thing's for sure, the political situation is not better for the victory of these evil men.
