Title: Hundreds turn out to support Turf Cutters in Loughrea

Fantastic day in Loughrea. The turf cutters resisting the EU have been mentioned on other threads but deserving of a new thread.

Hundreds of people gathered in support of the Four Turf Cutters in Loughrea!
This report is dedicated to the late Fr John Fahy (1893-1969).

It was a great honour to be in Loughrea earlier as over 800 people turned up in solidarity with the four turf cutters, who are standing up for what is right and oppose what is wrong.  Many turf cutters attended as well as people showing solidarity with the four men and upholding the right to cut turf on private property. Many travelled long distances to attend. Well done in particular to the group from Kerry.

Thought and Action wishes to thank the four men. Before court they were calm and composed. These four men are no criminals and an example to us all. They are standing up for the right thing. In the days ahead may they stay strong and as demonstrated today their morale is strong and people support them.

After the court case everybody marched through the streets of Loughrea. A bodhrán player lead the march and there was some song on the march. There was fantastic support from people. People waved and cheered from the doorways of shops and car horns were in use. School children waved from buses that passed by.

The case has been adjourned to the Galway Circuit Court on 10th April.

A cheer went up as the men left the court and were met with applause as they drove away.  A sincere word of thanks to the organisers of today’s very successful solidarity protest.  Do continue to support the four men and the turf cutters.

What's the deal? You can't cut turf anymore?

I went out to the bog with my uncles when I was a boy to cut turf. I didn't do much work but I had a great time. Last time I was in Ireland everyone from the little village in Donegal stilled used turf. That was in 1998.

Cutting turf is basically cutting big chungs of earth out of the groud and saving it to burn in a big stove.

Basically, a European Union Directive has stated turf can't be cut on certain bogs. They are legally owned and are private property.

The area in question effects 900 families, who cut turf to heat their homes and cook their meals.

Bord na Móna, a semi-state company in Ireland has destroyed bog land yet has never been prosecuted.

All roads lead to Loughrea tomorrow Wednesday 10th April 2013. People from all over Ireland are coming to "THE TOWN" to stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with the 4 turf cutters. The assembly point is the NPWS office at Westbridge, Loughrea at 10.30am. This will be a dignified gathering of support for the accused men. PEOPLE ATTENDING ARE ASKED TO STAY A SUITABLE DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE COURTHOUSE AND NOT TO INTERFERE WITH THE DISTRICT COURT PROCEEDINGS. We thank those who have shown support to us so far and those who have organised busses. STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT AND OPPOSE WHAT IS WRONG.

TURFCUTTERS TO BE TRIED AT GALWAY CIRCUIT COURT IN MAY
Up to 250 turfcutters have marched through the streets of Loughrea in solidarity with four men who've been sent forward for trial to Galway Circuit Court.

Books of evidence were served today at Loughrea District Court on the men who are charged in relation to illegal turfcutting on a bog near Portumna, designated as an SAC

The summonses relate to three separate incidents in May and August last year contrary to section 35 and section 67 of the European Communities Birds and Nautural Habitats regulations 2011

Pat McDonagh from Killeen, Ballyshrule; Michael D'Arcy of Ballycahill, Killimor; Padraic Byrne also of Killimor; and Anthony Porter of Bauntia, Woodford were released on bail of 100 euro each to appear before the Circuit Court on May 28th.

“This type of Cessna plane is used by the NPWS every day of the week to spy on our people as they go about their work. We have recorded this plane flying NINE times a day over our bogs and private homes.

To fly this plane, with a crew and 2 NPWS on board costs €1,200 per hour. It flies 12 hours a day over our people at a daily cost of €14,400. This is a weekly cost of €100,800.”

NPWS ‘Rangers’ and the Black and Tans!
http://thoughtactioneire.blogspot.ie/2013/04/npws-rangers-and-black-and-tans.html
Quote
Two photographs of scenes from the 2006 film, The Wind That Shakes the Barley. A modern day type of Black and Tan is trying to intimidate people in Galway. These ‘rangers’ are doing the dirty work of the European Union and trying to make criminals out of rural Irish people.

Turf cutting is under attack, a rural way of life is under attack, Tradition is under attack. You have spy planes flying over homes of people.

With turf to be cut, it is necessary to keep these ‘rangers’ out of your private property. There are laws against trespass and a God given and constitutional right to private property.

As shown in Loughrea on Wednesday, people still have common sense, the common sense and conviction to stand up for what is right and oppose what is wrong.

The NPWS 'Rangers' are not local people but their names and faces are known.

"NPWS Ranger Enda Mooney seen here trespassing on Private Property in Clonmoylan Bog."

"This is the NPWS Ranger who gave the order to take the privately owned machinery from a privately owned field. The field is well outside any SAC. Let him know what you think of his actions. He has no respect for the private property of others be it bog plots, fields or machinery."

"NPWS Ranger Eamon Meskell trespassing on PRIVATE PROPERTY in Clonmoylan Bog. This is the same Ranger who allowed 80 acres of Redwood Bog (in his own area) burn without intervention from the NPWS. He told the Nenagh Guardian that NPWS could not deal with the fire on this SAC (Redwood Bog) "BECAUSE IT WAS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY" Pictured above is Ranger Meskell trespassing on private property and at the same time trying to stop Irish Citizens from cutting turf on their private property."

The Siege of Clonmoylan. (2012). Not far from where a few generations earlier local people faced down British Crown forces.

"The seige of Clonmoylan June 2012. The State Forces came to steal PRIVATE machinery from a PRIVATE PROPERTY field. The State failed miserably. TURF WILL AGAIN BE CUT IN CLONMOYLAN BOG IN 2013. The turf cutters of Ireland won the seige of Clonmoylan. NPWS Director Conor O'Raghaillaigh now recognises that turf cutters have PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS and that he failed totally to stop turf cutting in any bog in 2012."

"Over €1,000,000 of borrowed money was spent by the Kenny Government in this effort to steal PRIVATE PROPERTY machinery. You know the story if you needed a Garda in a hurry ........................................ they were all at the seige of Clonmoylan."

"More of the beautiful turf cut in Clonmoylan Bog on August 31st 2012 when the State thought they had us stopped after stealing our turf cutting machinery. This time WE KEPT the NPWS Rangers OUT. We will cut on this plot and many, many more plots in 2013.
No Rangers need come."

"No bogowner is a criminal. No law has been broken. Bogowners are well entitled to cut and save turf on their own PRIVATE PROPERTY bog plots. State intimidation by the NPWS will not work. We will always cut turf for our families."

We are shocked and saddened by the untimely death of our spokesperson, colleague and dear friend Dermot Moran. Dermot fought tiredlessly for the Turf Cutters of Barroughter and Clonmoylan Bogs and the rights of the Turf Cutters to cut their turf, as well as the rights of all Turf Cutters in Ireland.
Dermot protected the Turf Cutters and their property during the seige of Clonmoylan in 2012. He was a man that never wavered from his principles. Dermot will be sadly missed by the turf cutting communities throughout Ireland and by his own local community.
A great man has been called home from us. Rest in peace Dermot.

"A Thiarna dean trocaire ar a anam dilis"

I think it means..."Lord have mercy on a faithful soul" or maybe "faithful servant." Not sure which, exactly.
