How to deal with social justice warriors

  • I work with one in particular who especially makes me uncomfortable (and who attempts to discredit my work to the boss to make herself look gleaming).
This is a person whose ideologies make me feel very uncomfortable.

I'm trying to avoid this person but they come into my work space to talk and I would rather just communicate by email alone.

How can I, a deeply religious and gentle person handle a very extreme person in the workplace who makes me really uncomfortable?

  • Can you say a little more? How does she make you uncomfortable? (apart from putting you down to make herself look better). If she does that she must know or feel she is inferior. What sort of ideologies? Are they work related? If not, then why is she bringing them up in work time? If related to her work, then do you need to counter them, or is it possible to ignore them?

  • I don't want to give too much info, but this is the kind of person who talks about gender in terms of transgendered and cis gendered, privilege of white race, women's rights, and so on. My workplace is becoming more like this, but I just want to do my work. I try to use body language to show I am uncomfortable but it doesn't really work. I'm sensitive to a lot of negativity and I don't want to engage with her.

Yes, this person has blatantly lied about things to the boss in meetings to look good. Also undermines me a lot and tries to make me look bad.

I don't know if it's because I'm Catholic or what.

  • Does your boss know she is trying to discredit your work and make you look bad? Any witnesses who will back you and testify that this is what's happening?

So what she is talking about has nought to do with work. She is interrupting your work and disturbing you into the bargain. You might have to use more than body language. Just be polite to her but tell her firmly that you are busy with work. Of course you are being paid to work and not to chat. That will be implicit.
She obviously has deep problems, probably about her own identity. Have you said anything to your boss? He may value you as a person who is reliable doing what he employs you for. And he must see her as well and what she is like (or maybe not). Trying to make you look bad will make her look bad.
Nevertheless pray for her conversion and salvation.

  • Put your foot down, firm.  No conversation.

It is just these kinds of people that weaken  and bring others to SIN.  See this people as an occasion of sin.  I work!  If you think best, keep a diary, IF they don't follow your command, I don't go there.

I had a job where  a "coven" of witches from the TOP down.  I wore my Miraculous medal, scapular and rosary in my pocket.  I would even suggest sprinkle your area with holy water. I had one witch ask me "who are you"?  They found me out and I found them out.  And I minded my business.  You go to work and you go home.  Those who were Christian, per se, knew I was and they were most happy with me and I was looked up to, per se.  So, be firm and hold your ground, as they say!  Hold your faith and hold your head high!

  • You may want to learn what the Church teaches on Social Justice, as she has an extensive doctrine going back to the Church Fathers.

Of course one can always politely remain silent.

Remember that when we let others upset us, it is us who are at fault. It is our task to reach what St. Ignatius calls "holy indifference". Silence is a divine right, it enables us to be solitary without isolating us from others.

Our Lord knew full well when to remain silent and when to speak up for social justice. If only we could know as He knew! Lord, increase in us the gifts of the Holy Spirit!

  • I would suggest focusing more on your work and avoid conversations about controversial topics.
