Title: Has any Jєωιѕн convert been canonized?
Post by: rum on May 02, 2018, 06:01:19 PM
It never occurred to me before, but I read this in Fr. Feeney's The Point newsletter:

Quote
It might surprise our readers to learn that they could go to any current copy of Who’s Who in American Jєωry and find listed there the names of some Catholic priests. The willingness of converted Jєωs (even those with Holy Orders) to remain part of the Jєωιѕн scene has always been a worry to our Holy Mother the Church. And perhaps this explains why, since the days of the Apostles, the Church has never found a converted Jєω it could canonize.

There has been a thread on this topic but I didn't find it in a quick search.

St Edith Stein is one converted Jєω who is canonized and I'm sure there are others I have read about in a more reliable age for canonizations.

The Point excerpt is from 1954, so up until then it claims no Jєωιѕн convert had been canonized.

As for Edith Stein, I question her worthiness for canonization: http://www.cwporter.com/letter15.htm

Not a Saint, but a venerable.  I suspect the reason he has not been canonized is more due to the current problems in Rome than to the sorts of reasons Fr. Feeney describes.

Quote
Francis Mary Paul Libermann (French: François-Marie-Paul Libermann; born Jacob Libermann; 14 April 1802 – 2 February 1852) was a 19th-century French Jєωιѕн convert to Catholicism, member of the Spiritan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritans) Congregation. He is best known for founding the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary which later merged with the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congregation_of_the_Holy_Spirit) (Spiritans). He is often referred to as "The Second Founder of the Spiritans". He was declared venerable (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venerable) in the Roman Catholic Church on 1 June 1876, by Pope Pius IX (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pius_IX).

There is a nice connection to trads, since Archbishop Lefebvre was a Spiritan.

Thanks. So I guess it's true that no pre-Vatican II Jєωιѕн convert has been canonized. This surprises me.

I cannot think of one pre-Vatican II canonized Saint who converted from Judaism. However, there are some canonized Saints of Jєωιѕн descent. For example, St. Teresa of Ávila was at least quarter Jєωιѕн by descent, but she was Catholic her entire life.

I am surprised that you are surprised.

How about St. Paul?  :fryingpan:

The Fr. Feeney quote included the sentence "And perhaps this explains why, since the days of the Apostles, the Church has never found a converted Jєω it could canonize."

We have been trying to think of Saints after the time of the Apostles and before Vatican II.  St. Paul does not qualify within these parameters.

1. Answer:

Rums quote:
"And perhaps this explains why, since the days of the Apostles, the Church has never found a converted Jєω it could canonize."

2. Edith Stein is a good topic for lively debate.
"Edith Stein, was a German (Polish) Jєωιѕн philosopher who converted to Roman Catholicism and became a Discalced Carmelite nun. She is canonized as a martyr and saint of the Catholic Church. Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Stein)"

Ah, but she was canonized by a Polish pope, who in the eyes of тαℓмυdic Jєωery, was a hereditary Jєω
(Pope John Paul II's mother was a polish Jєωess with a maiden name of Katz).

In this book, Saint Stein very lightly denounces the тαℓмυd as "sophistry", when it is much more than that.

Under what Pontificate these canonizations occured?

Are you sure that these martyrs are saints venerated in the Roman Catholic Church? instead of an Oriental Church, such as the Syriac Orthodox Church?

Well, if you’re talking about formal canonisation by a pope, tell that to St. Patrick.
I’m sure this person is NOT venerated in the ROMAN Catholic church, but then how many non-Latin, pre-schism saints after the Patristic age are? In the Byzantine Catholic Church all seven of the “archangels” are venerated by name; the Roman church recognises only three and Pope St. Zachary struck even St. Uriel of the permitted list. So what? St. Constantine the Great, pray for us. Truth can’t be relative. If this boy was martyred in 390 and is recognised in the Syriac “Orthodox” church liturgy, what of it? What am I denying? That he existed? That being killed by his father for converting to the Catholic faith didn’t earn him sainthood?

Saint Constantine? Ha! Not much if a saint. More of a barbarian who had some sympathy for the Church. He had his son killed, and then when he found out that his wife had lied about the son, Constantine had her killed. What a guy.

He was baptized on his deathbed by an Arian heretic.

I have a hypothetical question then. Not many Jєωs in Abraham's lineage (i.e. bloodline) converted to Christianity in the first century A.D? The converts were mostly pagans who did not practice the Mosaic Law?

Ah, but she was canonized by a Polish pope [Pope "St." JPII], who in the eyes of тαℓмυdic Jєωery, was a hereditary Jєω
(Pope John Paul II's mother was a polish Jєωess with a maiden name of Katz).

.
I was going to say "St." JPII but then whether he ever converted might be a problem!   ;)

I think that this is a saint of the Coptic Orthodox Church, not Byzantine Catholic.

I have a hypothetical question then. Not many Jєωs in Abraham's lineage (i.e. bloodline) converted to Christianity in the first century A.D? The converts were mostly pagans who did not practice the Mosaic Law?
The Book of Acts describes the early Church. It tells of many Jєωs converting, especially in response to the preaching of St. Peter.  It also relates conversions of non-Jєωs, especially due to St. Paul.  Some of the New Testament epistles address tensions and disagreements that existed between converts from these different backgrounds.  So it seems like there were a  fair number of converts from Judaism at first, but eventually this changed.  This seems to be what Our Lord is talking about in this passage from Matt 21: 42ff

Jesus saith to them: Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? By the Lord this has been done; and it is wonderful in our eyes. [43] (http://www.drbo.org/x/d?b=drb&bk=47&ch=21&l=43-#x) Therefore I say to you, that the kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and shall be given to a nation yielding the fruits thereof. [44] (http://www.drbo.org/x/d?b=drb&bk=47&ch=21&l=44-#x) And whosoever shall fall on this stone, shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder. [45] (http://www.drbo.org/x/d?b=drb&bk=47&ch=21&l=45-#x) And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they knew that he spoke of them.

How about Father Ratisbonne is he "blessed" ?

A converted Jєω (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08399a.htm), born at Strasburg (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14313c.htm) on 1 May, 1814; died at Ain Karim near Jerusalem (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08344a.htm), on 6 May, 1884. He belonged to a wealthy (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15571a.htm) and prominent Jєωιѕн family (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05782a.htm) in Alsace. After studying law (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09053a.htm) at Paris (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11480c.htm) he became a member of his uncle's famous banking firm, and in 1841 was betrothed (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02537c.htm) to the daughter of his oldest brother. As she was only sixteen years old, the marriage was postponed, and Ratisbonne entered upon a pleasure trip to the Orient. Though nominally a Jєω (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08399a.htm), he was a radical infidel, a scoffer at religion, and, after the conversion of his brother Theodor (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12659b.htm), a rabid enemy of everything Catholic (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03449a.htm). On his intended tour to the Orient, he came to Rome (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13164a.htm), where on 20 January, 1842, he was miraculously (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10338a.htm) converted to Catholicism (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03449a.htm) in the Church of S. Andrea delle Fratte by an apparition of the Blessed Virgin (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15464b.htm). After his conversion (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04347a.htm) he assisted his brother, Theodor (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12659b.htm), in founding the Sisterhood of Our Lady of Sion in 1843, was ordained (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11279a.htm) priest (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12406a.htm) in 1847, and entered the Society of Jesus (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14081a.htm). Desirous, however, to devote himself entirely to the conversion of the Jєωs (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08399a.htm), he left the society (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14074a.htm) with the consent of Pius IX (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12134b.htm), transplanted the Sisters of Sion to Jerusalem in 1855, and built for them in 1856 the large Convent of Ecce Homo with a school (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13554b.htm) and an orphanage (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11322b.htm) for girls. In 1860 he erected the Convent of St. John on the mountain at Ain Karim, together with a church and another orphanage (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11322b.htm) for girls. Here Alphonse laboured with a few companions (Pères de Sion) for the conversion of Jєωs (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08399a.htm) and Mohammadens until his death. For boys he erected the orphanage (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11322b.htm) of St. Peter, near the Gate of Jaffa (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08268a.htm) outside of Jerusalem (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08344a.htm), with a school (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13554b.htm) for mechanical arts in the city.

Blessed Father Marie-Alphonse Ratisbonne (http://www.traditioninaction.org/religious/c020rpRatisbonne01.html)
Page II (http://www.traditioninaction.org/religious/c021rpRatisbonne02.html)

But his conversion was by Our Lady's very public miraculous intercession.

The тαℓмυd's blasphemous claims against Our Lord Jesus and His Blessed Mother are enough to make Heaven come down with vengeance upon the whole, sad race.

It is quite amazing, not to mention extremely scandalous, to see how JP II used the canonization of Stein to toss off some downright falsehoods saying that Stein died in the gas chambers at Auschwitz and that literally millions of Jєωs died in the Shoah.  This might just be considered the closest the Church via JP II or any other person sitting in the See of Peter has falsely canonized the h0Ɩ0h0αx as something the Church "must also remember."

where we read:
4. Dear brothers and sisters! Because she was Jєωιѕн, Edith Stein was taken with her sister Rosa and many other Catholic Jєωs from the Netherlands to the cσncєnтrαтισn cαмρ in Auschwitz, where she died with them in the gas chambers. Today we remember them all with deep respect. A few days before her deportation, the woman religious had dismissed the question about a possible rescue: “Do not do it! Why should I be spared? Is it not right that I should gain no advantage from my Baptism? If I cannot share the lot of my brothers and sisters, my life, in a certain sense, is destroyed”.
From now on, as we celebrate the memory of this new saint from year to year, we must also remember the Shoah, that cruel plan to exterminate a people — a plan to which millions of our Jєωιѕн brothers and sisters fell victim. May the Lord let his face shine upon them and grant them peace (cf. Nm 6:25f.).

"The Jєωs knew that Christ was the son of David. And even now they hope for His Coming. It is hidden from them that He has come, but it is hidden because they willed it so. For, not acknowledging Him on the cross, the knowledge of Him reigning in glory should not be theirs ... Why are the Jєωs hoping for what has already come, and not fearful for what is to come? For Our Lord Jesus Christ ... referred Himself as "the Stone" (Matthew xxi.44), that whoever stumbles upon it shall be bruised; but upon whom it shall fall, it will grind to powder ... Lying on the ground, it shakes whoever falls over it; coming from on high, it crushes the proud. The Jєωs have already been shaken by their previous stumble. What awaits them is to be crushed by His Coming."  ~ St. Augustine

It never occurred to me before, but I read this in Fr. Feeney's The Point newsletter:

It might surprise our readers to learn that they could go to any current copy of Who’s Who in American Jєωry and find listed there the names of some Catholic priests. The willingness of converted Jєωs (even those with Holy Orders) to remain part of the Jєωιѕн scene has always been a worry to our Holy Mother the Church. And perhaps this explains why, since the days of the Apostles, the Church has never found a converted Jєω it could canonize.

"With troubled heart, We are reminded that many of those converted from the error of Jєωιѕн blindness to the light of the Christian Faith have fallen back into their former falsehood. Proceed with intensity against all who make themselves guilty of this crime, against heretics, and against those who support, protect, and defend them."

~ Pope Nicholas IV (the Bull, "With Troubled Heart," PAC, cf. p.659).

Augustine
In religion she was known as Sister Benedicita of the Cross.

According to Wikipedia, it's "Benedicta", but they erred by claiming she died in the gas chamber.

There were no gas chambers in Auschwitz during WWII.  Only after the war were they installed.

Either way, she was a holy religious and a saint.

According to the official post Vatican II narrative of JP II who fast tracked the canonization with a controversial one miracle (child cured of Tylenol overdose).  If the child was cured of an overdose, JP II used the canonization to overdose us with h0Ɩ0h0αx propaganda.  Not a good sign to place fabrications about Auschwitz into a canonization.  Not a good sign at all.  JP II who beholden to the Tribe had no problem about pontificating about the h0Ɩ0h0αx, but could not find it within himself to abide by our Lady of Fatima's request to consecrate Russia.  Once Russia is finally consecrated the world will learn the real truth about the h0Ɩ0h0αx and the big fat sacred cow of h0Ɩ0cαųstianity will get struck dead.

Stein may have been a holy religious for all I know, but to declare that she was gassed to death is an ideological Jєω appeasing declaration, not a factual one.  Interesting to note is the fact that the Tribe was upset with the Church for saying that she died in Auschwitz because she was Catholic.  The Tribe claims she died in Auschwitz because she was a Jєω.

Poche,
Yes, in the schismatic newChurch, which you defend, she's a saint.
Just think, after the coming Chastisement, all the canonizations under the last 6 modernist popes will be put under Canonical review.  There even is the possibility St. Pope JPII will be exhumed and put on trial.
What a wonderful day that will be for the Catholic Church, to have righted Herself.

How is this relevant to the quote of St. Augustine?

St Epiphanius of Salamis, Doctor of the Church
 12 May

.

Epiphanius was born in 315 of Israelite parents, near Eleutheropolis, Palestine. He lost his father while young, and was raised by a rich man. He began to study Holy Scripture and with his sister received Baptism; then leaving part of his inheritance to her, he sold his property, gave the money to poor, only keeping what he needed to buy books for his studies.
 .
With a desire for perfection, he was formed for monastic life by the solitaries of Egypt. He returned to Palestine, was ordained priest and founded a monastery in Eleutheropolis of which he was abbot for 30 years. His labor to grow in virtue seemed to surpass his strength; but always his answer was: “God gives the kingdom of heaven only on condition that we labor; and all we can do bears no proportion to such a crown.” He would relax his austerities for hospitality’s sake, favoring charity over abstinence. To all this he added tireless application to study. He was shocked in reading the many errors of Origen, and began early in his life to caution the faithful against them. Epiphanius benefitted by St Hilarion of Palestine’s spiritual direction for over 20 years.
 .
A prophecy made to him in Egypt, that one day he would be bishop in Cyprus, alarmed him; and so he decided to go elsewhere. But his ship was blown off course to Cyprus, where the bishops were assembled to choose a new bishop of Salamis, and by providence Epiphanius was elected. He continued to wear the monastic habit, visiting his Palestine monastery from time to time.
 .
In the Arian persecution in the reign of Constantius, St Epiphanius often left his cell to comfort and encourage the Faithful. The veneration which all men had for his sanctity, exempted him from the persecution of the Arian emperor Valens; being almost the only Catholic bishop in that part of the empire who was spared.
 .
He was the oracle of Palestine and the neighboring countries; no one ever visited St Epiphanius who did not receive great spiritual comfort by his holy advice.
 .
He journeyed to Antioch to try to convert Vitalis the Apollinarist bishop; and he attended a council convoked at Rome by Pope St Damasus.  He was a friend of St Jerome, addressing him as "most loving lord, son, and brother, the presbyter Jerome". He was an authority on Marian devotions, and his writings include a Bible dictionary, and The Medicine Box, a huge work which catalogued and refuted 80 heresies of his day.
 .
In 403, he was taken ill and died during the voyage from Constantinople back to Salamis, having been bishop 36 years. God honored his tomb with miracles.
