The term “gaslighting” comes from the 1944 film Gaslight, in which a husband manipulates his wife’s perception of reality in order to make her doubt her sanity. He dims their gas-fueled lights and pretends that he does not see it so she will feel confused. He moves her Jєωelry and tells her she must have misplaced them and he “won’t tell anyone her memory is failing.” He pretends not to hear the workmen he has hired and tells her that if she hears something she is hallucinating. Once again, he assures her that he will protect her and not tell anyone she is losing her mind.
